The Bentley Continental GT is even more desirable without a roof

Yet, we only had the car for 24 hours and it rained the entire time.

Ever since the first Continental GT came out of the production line in 2003, it instantly became Bentley's number one selling car. Of course, the car was the smallest and most affordable model of the range, but the GT was still 100% Bentley. I have always enjoyed the idea of an ultra-fast, abundantly luxurious, and staggeringly beautiful coupé in which you can crunch miles in absolute comfort. This is exactly what the Continental GT has been designed to do and it has been perfect at that for the last 18 years. In 2018, Bentley announced the third iteration of its iconic model, and a couple of weeks ago, we got to drive it. Not just any Continental GT, this one was an elegant cabriolet finished in this beautiful Onyx black colour over a beige leather interior. Absolutely sumptuous.

So, what is the new Continental GT Convertible all about? Well, everything has changed since the last model. The typical 6.0-litre W12 is still here and now produces 635 horsepower. However, the car we got from Bentley Geneva was equipped with a 4.0-litre V8 that can be found in many other performance cars from the Volkswagen group like the Audi RS6, or the Porsche Cayenne Turbo. If you think this is a downgrade, think again. To put it simply, this engine is a true masterpiece. This 550 horsepower machine is capable of going from 0 to 100 km/h in only 3.9 seconds and can reach a maximum speed of 319 km/h! So, no it's not a base engine. Therefore, doesn't only the Continental GT looks good, it is blisteringly fast as well.

Apart from the new exterior design that is now as stylish as ever especially in this convertible configuration, the interior also received a major overhaul. As expected, you're greeted by the finest materials such as wood, metal, and fine leather. The technology is also up to date and stuff like the infotainment has been borrowed from Audi and Porsche, which isn't a bad thing since it works so well. I also like how it rotates on itself by the push of a button when you don't want to look at it. Just looks very James Bond'ish. Take that Aston Martin! By the way, didn't James Bond drive a Bentley in the original books? OK, off-topic.

A little disappointment comes from the digital dash screen. Yes, it is configurable and allows to display multiple information, but I would have loved to see classic analog speedometers that definitely look more classy. Another thing maybe. I thought there were just too many buttons on the center console. Sure, you can probably quickly get used to it but since I only had the car for 24 hours, I must say that it got me all confused at some times. Apart from that, there isn't much to complain about. Obviously. It is a Bentley, it's supposed to be a near perfection car. Big changes also happened underneath the car. The new Continental GT is now sportier than ever and that is thanks to... Porsche and its Panamera. The German and the British share the same underpinnings, and again that's not a bad thing since the Panamera is one of the most dynamic cars in its class. The result is a Continental GT that is as precise, grippy, and nimble as ever despite its nearly 2.5 tons weight. We always knew it was the sportiest of the Bentley lineup, but now it has reached a whole new level. I will go as far as saying that it's very fun to drive.

I knew I would probably not be disappointed by the new Continental GT, but the Bentley is more than that. It's phenomenal. The British brand has masterfully blended the grand touring capabilities that have made them so successful with high performance and technology. Plus, they incorporated that in a car that looks extremely beautiful. Pick the cabriolet and you end up with the ultimate GT that will constantly make you want to take the long way home. The tasteful Continental GT is one of the most desirable cars in the world, and after driving one we can clearly understand why.

We would like to extend our deepest gratitude to Bentley Geneva for allowing us to discover this beautiful Continental GT. Without them, this article would have never been possible. They have a beautiful dealership near the city center, and have some of the most amazing Bentleys in their showroom. You can find their website here, and their Instagram account here.
