Remote control cars have been a birthday present and Christmas stocking filler for years now, so it's no surprise that remote control helicopters are also perennially popular (although not as much as their land-based cousins). Just like remote control cars, they're a toy that appeals to children and adults alike and they come in a wide variety of shapes, sizes and price points too. It seems like there's an almost dizzying array of them to choose from, so with that in mind I decided to put together a list of the best of the bunch that you can get right now. Pick one of these and you'll be able to conquer the skies! Well, around your home... or a small area in your local park...

The one for fans of militaria (and beginners!)

Syma Rc helicopter

Amazon review: "Excellent little helicopter. This is so much fun and very easy to use"

This offering from Syma is definitely the right kind of remote control helicopter for you if you want something that's military-themed. Looking very much like an Apache ground attack helicopter, the Syma S109G is definitely a mean looking machine! It's also a really good helicopter for beginners as it's a 3.5 channel model with simple controls (up & down, back & forward and left & right) and a built-in gyroscope to keep it stable during flight. It can run for up to 6-8 minutes of flight time and when it runs out of batteries you can easily charge it up anywhere as it has USB charging. As a bonus party trick, it also has LED lights fitted, so you could take it out at night or at dawn or dusk. You honestly can't go that wrong with this helicopter!

Another great one for beginners

Syma Mini RC Helicopter

Amazon review: "This has probably got to be the easiest to fly remote control helicopter I’ve ever"

For those of us who are proper beginners to remote control helicopters, Syma also offers this much more civilian-looking S107H-E mini helicopter. Clearly designed with absolute beginners in mind, the S107H-E has a very sturdy all-metal body that can withstand multiple crashes, a low speed mode for beginner aviators and functions that allow the helicopter to hold itself at altitude automatically and take off and land with the press of a single button. It's tiny size (it can easily fit in your hand!) also means that it's very easy to manoeuvre in tight spaces.

Another sturdy chopper

Alloy Volitation Helicopter

This chopper has a range of more than 100m and a 10 minute flight time

At first glance, you might have a bit of a giggle at the really odd name this remote control helicopter from control this has. The Volitation is no slouch though. Like the Syma S107H-E above it has a metal construction, meaning it'll soak up any bumps and prangs like a champ. It's also very easy to control thanks to its 3 channel radio that includes hover and takeoff & landing functions and even boasts a flight time of up to 10 minutes! Weird name aside, the Voltitation might be a bit of a dark horse here!

The one with the very 80s name

MKZDGM RC Helicopter

Amazon review: "Nice little indoor helicopter for the older kid or adult"

This remote control helicopter has a name that wouldn't sound out of place in some kind of crazy 80s action movie (Airwolf anyone?) or the golden era of Power Rangers! The almost-hilariously named Fly Wolf is actually a really great helicopter for beginners, as it's a 3.5 channel one with very easy controls, a built in gyroscope and it's made out of very sturdy materials. It has 6-8 minutes of flight time and a charging time of 30-40 minutes thanks to lithium-ion batteries. You definitely wouldn't want to fly this one outdoors, though.

Something a bit different...

Single Propeller RC Helicopter

Amazon review: "Great helicopter to learn with. Flew straight out the box lots of fun"

This offering from DeliaWinterfel is a bit different to the other remote control helicopters you'll see on this list. This one is a single propeller design, a bit unusual in the remote control helicopter world as the majority are dual propeller models. This one also uses a four-channel system, meaning its controls are more advanced in terms of its controls than a lot of other helicopters. It does have a built-in gyroscope however, so it should stay pretty stable during flight. If you fancy something a bit different and don't mind a bit of a challenge, this could be a good one for you!

Another single rotor (with a very cool name!)

Esky RC Helicopter

Amazon review: "Overall a well made and enjoyable toy for a beginner."

This remote control helicopter from Esky is another offering that has a name that sounds like it's straight out of the 80s. That's because this one is called the Airwolf! It even looks like a helicopter you'd see in Airwolf with its sleek, black design. Like the helicopter from DeliaWinterfel it's a single rotor design, but it has a 3 channel radio instead of a 4 channel one so it might be a touch easier to control for people who've never piloted single rotor choppers before. Whilst it's one of the more expensive options on this list, it could be a really good choice for anyone who wants to try out a single rotor design, as well as having something that looks really cool!

The one for stunts & aerobatics!

Syma RC Helicopter

Amazon review: "In terms of ease to fly, it's super easy!"

Another offering from Syma (they seem to be a real market leader!), the Helifury 360 is a very different take on the concept of a remote control helicopter. This very sci-fi/retro-futuristic looking machine looks more like a dropship from the Halo games or something you might expect to show up in Fallout if The Enclave are after you, but there's a very good reason it's been designed this way. It's the only one on this list that can do stunts! It can flip and flop around up to 360 degrees in any direction and, just in case you do mess up whilst you're having fun with this chopper's aerobatic capabilities, it's made of very strong anti-impact materials. It also has altitude hold, take off & landing with the push of a single button and a slow mode for beginner flyers, so it should be easy for anyone to get to grips with flying it. It even comes with its own helipad!

  • Strange how all the models mentioned are the cheap toy type, how can this say they are the best RC helicopters, I work at a RC model store and I’m finding this rather comical, all the models listed are toys if they break they are destined for the bin, I would say the Blade range from Horizon Hobbies are much better slightly more expensive models but if anything breaks they can be fully fixed by buying the parts

You can find these on amazon or through a model shop such as...

    wheelspinmodels.co.uk

Hope this info helps someone that’s looking into buying a decent RC helicopter or Drone
