The North York Moors
The North York Moors are located in the North East of England and provide some truly spectacular views to take in. The Moors have the largest amount of heather moorland in the world giving it a rough and timeless quality.
There are several routes to take but we recommend starting in the quaint market town of Helmsley and heading towards Stokesley before making your way over the moors and to the seaside town of Whitby to end the day with some of the UK’s best fish and chips. Just watch out for rouge sheep on your way across the Moors, they tend to stand in the road and can make for quite a shock mid-corner.
The Coniston Loop
The Lake District is possibly the most beautiful part of the UK and The Coniston Loop is a 42-mile journey through some rarely seen parts of the Lake District. It’s the perfect way to take in the Lake District and we recommend stopping regularly to simply take in your surroundings.
There are plenty of towns to stop in for a drink or bite to eat and highlights like Stanley Force waterfall make for a great stop along the way.
The North Coast 500
No list of UK road trips is complete without the North Coast 500. This road trip is definitely well known and possibly the most popular UK road trip. The road is, as the name suggests, around 500 miles long and takes you around the most northern coast of the United Kingdom.
There are some incredible driving roads, spectacular views and stunning wildlife along the route. If you do go you can sample some of the incredible food and drink at the villages and towns along the route. The route can get busy though so if you are stopping in hotels make sure you book well in advance.
The Atlantic Highway
The Atlantic Highway is a 70-mile section of the A39 that snakes along the coast from Barnstaple in the north of Devon to Newquay in Cornwall. While the drive is only 1.5 hours the stunning coastal views and villages are worth stopping to take in.
If you have time consider taking the toll road to the Trevose Head lighthouse for a spectacular photo opportunity and the chance to take in the stunning views.
Ben Nevis - Isle of Skye
The journey from Ben Nevis to the Isle of Skye offers you everything you could want in a road trip. All in 100 miles or so. Starting at the UK’s highest peak Ben Nevis and travelling along the Hebrides archipelago you’ll find views of picturesque lochs and the breathtaking landscapes that make Scotland one of the most beautiful places in the world.
Once you reach the Isle of Skye there’s no better way to end the day with some delicious local food watching the sunset.
So there you have it! Our top 5 picks for the best UK road trips. The UK is home to some of the most incredible places in the world so this list is hardly exhaustive, if you feel like taking one of these road trips on you won’t regret it.
