Ryuichi Kiyonari had the potential to be one of the finest motorcycle racers ever to come out of Japan. He spent some time on the world stage as well as in the British Superbike championship and he was as brave and fast as they come.

Unfortunately, racers also need to be consistent. Kiyo never quite managed to pull that aspect off, sometimes trailing with the backmarkers on occasion.

When he got out of bed on the right side, he could dominate proceedings like nobody else. Here's a clip of him having a good day, during a rainy qualifying session at a notoriously slippery Donington circuit aboard his Honda Fireblade in 2009. Everyone else was hiding in the pit garages. Kiyo was out taking names and kicking ass.

Enjoy one of the finest wet laps ever caught on film.

  • Unforgettable.

  • I do take issue with the article saying he lacked consistency. He was 3 time BSB Champion and won two championships in the Far East, probably fairer to say he went off the boil later in his career.

    • I think it's a fair assessment. Some weekends Kiyo could be down the order on a potentially race-winning machine, other weekends he'd be on the podium

  • That is extremely impressive.
