The Bugatti Chiron has smashed the 300mph barrier

A record attempt in August saw the car hit 305mph

The Bugatti Chiron has become the first road going car to break the magical 300mph barrier.

During a record attempt on 2 August 2019, Andy Wallace took a lightly modified Chiron (thought to be the Chiron SuperSport prototype) to 304.773mph (490.483 km/h) at Volkswagen Group's Ehra-Lessien test track in Germany.

This means the Chiron beats the previous record, set at 284.55mph by Koenigsegg.

What mods do you need for 300mph?

Bugatti's not released more details than that so far, but Top Gear magazine is reporting that the car used for the production run wasn't your ordinary Chiron. The Top Gear website says that the car was 25cm longer than the production car and uses a laser-controlled ride-height system to ensure that the car sticks to the ground while simultaneously creating as little drag as possible.

The car used to smash the record was a stripped-out single-seat Chiron with modified bodywork

Bugatti hasn't officially confirmed the car's spec yet, but presumably the car would've been running on a bespoke set of Michelin tyres designed for spinning very, very fast.

Top Gear says that the Chiron's flip-up rear wing and airbrake were consigned to a dustbin in the corner of the Molsheim works in favour of a static rear deck, and the passenger seat was chucked out as well – all in a bid to save weight.

Power was eased up to 1578bhp, which, if we were partial to a spot of gambling would imagine will appear in some special edition Chiron given time.

Bugatti bows out of top speed record attempts

Top Gear is also reporting that the brand will no longer compete for top-speed bragging rights. Speaking to Top Gear, Bugatti CEO Stephan Winkelmann said: "We have shown several times that we build the fastest cars in the world. In future we will focus on other areas."

  • Koenigsegg will still keep the production record. 🤔

    • Then they'll break it again with the Jesko if everything goes to plan

    • Yeh. They'll still need to strip the Aero before hand and probably mod the gear ratios.

But still, unless Bugatti drops an official Supersports with a record at Frankfurt, this is still anyone's game.

  • Speed isn't everything, but when it looks as good as the Bugatti, then the combination is unbeatable for me.

  • I have no words... wow. Just wow. The next barrier has finally been broken by a road car after 30 years (referencing the F40 reaching 200).

I suspect this is a prototype for the Chrion SS? I guess they'll have to try and find a way to make those tyres more 'normal' road friendly.

    • I am just waiting for the 500kmph barrier, they are so close.

    • Its just 10kph over what they have done, surely its within reach in less than a decade. Maybe it will take just months for them or some one else to achieve it.

  • So someone walks up to Bugatti and offers a blank check for the 300mph car, and you don't think they will make it? This will go into production in some form or another, I'm sure.
