The C8 Corvette's Nürburgring lap time has just been set

At 7:28.30 it's almost as quick as the Lamborghini Huracan LP610-4, but slower than last year's ZR1

We've seen plenty of evidence of the C8 Corvette's presence at the Nürburgring Nordchliefe, with dozens of spy shots coming from various photographers. Happily, some of those people have managed to time the car, and at an alleged time of 7:28.30 it is far from the fastest Corvette to have gone round the ring.

Furthermore, the last generation C7 ZR1 matched the million dollar Porsche 918 Spyder with a time of 6:57. However, at $130,000 the C7 ZR1 was by far not the cheapest Corvette ever made, especially as the standard C8 will start at just $60,000.

Having said that, this is quite disappointing, the C8 is meant to be a revolutionary platform for Chevrolet. The car is being treated by many as the second coming, and in my opinion it should be able to keep up with its growing reputation. This lap time furthers my point, as many people who have actually driven the car have also said that while good, it isn't the greatest thing ever built.

People must also remember that the corvette is at the end of the day a $60,000 car built by General Motors. And while impressive, Chevrolet had to cut corners somewhere, there is no such thing as a free lunch.

  • Tuners- where are you? You are probably on it right now.. can’t wait to see what you come up with to fix the short comings of the new Vette. Power won’t be hard to fix, it’s the chassis tune which will get interesting. If the stock car isn’t knocking everyone’s socks off, the tuners will find the limitations and work on fixes I’m sure. A Hennessy Super Vette? 1200 hp and massive aero? Look out Europe..

  • Awe come on. This is an apples and oranges post. Comparing a base model anything against a top of the line anything Is not fair. In this case the base model C8 against the well optioned C7Zed? Compare the C8 Zed with the C7 Zed when it comes out, then feel free to complain if it comes up short.

    • It isn’t an unfair comparison, the base C8 should be close to the top of the line C7. This is a platform which is being hailed as the greatest thing ever, and it simply isn’t living up to those expectations

    • How is it hailed as the best ever ? Its not even released

  • It's just wrong to expect the base C8 to beat the top-spec C7 ZR1, and the C7 ZR1 never achieved a sub-7-minute lap time, it was confirmed to be 7:04. Regardless, it's like expecting the 992 Carrera S to beat the 991 GT2RS, which is total BS.

Yes, the C8 is mid-engined, meaning it would have a bit more advantage, but we should acknowledge the fact that being front-engined isn't a huge disadvantage as long as the weight is well-distributed and the aerodynamics are fine. For example, the Dodge Viper ACR and the AMG GT R Pro still manage to do sub 7:10 laps despite their 'born limits'. The 7:28 time of the C8 was similar to the lap time of the base Lamborghini Huracan, which is way more expensive and has two more cylinders than the C8.

Therefore, instead of whining how the base spec C8 is slower than a C7 ZR1, wait till the C8 ZR1 comes out. Then we'll see.

    • I’m not expecting the C8 to be as fast as the C7 ZR1, the issue being that there is too big a disparity between the two for the C8 to be “the greatest car of all time” as many are making it out to be.

    • I'm not sure where you heard the term 'the greatest car of all time' but I remember no one actually claiming it from GM nor journalism sites. Yes, they do phrase it as the most 'revolutionary' Corvette, but it is a bit early to easily state "It's...

    • Well,not totally sure. A standard 488,with a good 175hp more, lapped by german mag SportAuto,did 7.21

  • C'mon everybody, the C8 is a fantastic car for the money and a time of 7:28 isn't bad at all. Once the C8 becomes available in Germany I'll seriously consider getting one and I'm saying this as a current Porsche driver.
