The Cars Of Rock Legends: Now You Can Own One

With the kind of money some of rock's biggest and best names have lying around, it's no wonder that the more petrolheaded rockers among them own some very eccentric cars. From extravagantly luxurious to purebred racers, the cars of rock legends are as varied as they themselves are. And with today's auction of 3 vintage cars owned by rock legends, let's have a look at what some of rock's all-time greats own.

Eric Clapton

Eric Clapton is not just an extremely talented guitarist, he is also a passionate motoring enthusiast. And unlike many exotic car aficionados, he can actually afford one. And not just any one. Clapton has his own one-off Ferrari SP 12EC, built just for him and designed by Peninfarina to be a modern interpretation of a car he loves so much, he owned three of them over the years: the Ferrari 512 Berlinetta Boxer. Underneath, however, it's a Ferrari 458 Italia, also retaining its V8 instead of a flat-twelve that powered the 512 BB.

Mark Knopfler

Dire Straits frontman and brilliant guitaris Mark Knopfler may not have been born rich, but he certainly is now. And he spent his wealth in a way that many here would definitely approve of: 50's sports cars. Knopfler owns both a Austin-Healey 100 and one of 26 Maserati 300S's ever produced. And he doesn't just let them sit in his garage. He is beside a collector of vintage race cars also an avid amateur race driver, taking part in many historic competitions, and frequently shows off his wonderful collection at vintage race events like Goodwood.

Nick Mason

Using the proceeds he got after the massive success of Dark Side Of The Moon, Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason bought himself a Ferrari 250 GTO. Now the most expensive car in the world, in 1977 it cost Mason a mere £35,000. It has since been reported that Mason has had offers of anywhere between forty and fifty million pounds from investors. Yet, he still considers his 250 GTO his best car and has no intention of selling it. Beside his Ferrari, Mason has a staggering collection of vintage racers, and he himself has even raced at Le Mans five times. So he's more of a petrolhead who happened to be a really good sticks man than the other way around.

Today at the Bonhams sale at the Goodwood Members' Meeting, one of the most special cars on sale is a Ferrari Dino 246 GT, originally owned by Mason. One of only 21 Dino's to come with flared wheelarches, combined with the fact that it once belonged to Mason, make this Ferrari a very desirable set of wheels.

Neil Young

A 50's classic cruiser is maybe not what you would think a environmental activist drives around all day, yet folk rock songsmith Neil Young has somehow made it work. The former Buffalo Springfield member drives a 1959 Lincoln Continental Mark IV - you know, the big one with the horrible mpg numbers. But Neil Young has modified his to do 100 miles per gallon by making his gas-guzzling Detroit beast a hybrid car. Called the 'LincVolt', he drove it across America to spread the good news that hybrid cars don't always have to be Priuses.

Brian Johnson

One of the rock world's biggest petrolheads, Brian Johnson has a well-filled garage. He owns a Rolls-Royce Phantom, a 1920's Bentley 4 1/2 Litre Vanden Plas and a 458 Italia, and many more, but the car that excites the AC/DC singer the most is his 1965 Lola T70 Mark 1. The last of only 15 cars built, this British racing car with a beating Ford V8 heart is blessed with 640 angry horses under the bonnet, and a weight of only 1,500 pounds. And it's not just an investment for Johnson. Like Mason, he likes to take part in historic races, so his Lola sees enough sunlight as well.

Rod Stewart

'Rod The Mod' loves cars, and especially Ferrari's. He uses a 458 Spider as a daily drive, and over the years he's owned more Ferrari's than he himself can recall, so he became one of the people able to buy a Ferrari Enzo ahead of everyone else. And of course he did. But he doesn't just stick to the Prancing Horse. Initially being a Lamborghini man, he has also owned, and sold, a Lamborghini Miura P400S, and he goes shopping in a Rolls-Royce Ghost. But the car that stands out has to be the Ferrari Enzo.

Rod Stewart isn't much of a car collector, however, selling many of the cars he doesn't need anymore. Same goes for his 1991 Lamborghini Diablo, that he bought as a Christmas present to himself. The successor to the famous Countach, the Diablo looks just as outrgeous as its predecessor, and its build quality is higher. Combined with a celebrity former owner and low mileage, and this beauty is expected to fetch around £120,000-140,000.

Sir Paul McCartney

Bought by the famous Beatle during their peak in 1968, Sir Paul McCartney is the proud owner of a very rare Lamborghini 400 GT 2+2. One of only 250 400 GT's ever made, and one of four to reach Britain, it was bought by McCartney during their work on the film 'Yellow Submarine'. The second production vehicle built by Lamborghini and the successor to the 350 GT, 400 GT's are generally quite expensive, and the fact that McCartney has owned it certainly doesn't make it any cheaper.
