The Chevy Corvette C8 Will Produce 550 Horsepower

Think about it. Everyone knows how much horsepower the C8 Corvette will be pulling. Not one single car or non-car enthusiast believes it will produce less than 500 horsepower. Here's the final number: 525. That's right, that's how much horsepower the C8 is going to produce.

C8 Stingray Will Weigh 6.8 Pounds Per Horsepower

Due to the increased length and width, the C8 will weigh about the same as the C7 Z06 and ZR1. Autoweek has estimated that the base C8 will weigh 6.8 pounds per horsepower, setting the C8 to weigh around 3,570 pounds, with the "upgraded" C8 (likely Z06) weighing 4.5 pounds per horsepower and the "hybrid" C8 (likely ZR1) weighing 3.8 pounds per horsepower.

The C8 will be targeting the Honda NSX (known as the Acura NSX in North America), which is another mid-engine supercar with a similar weight-to-power ratio. However, the C8 will retain the rear-wheel drivetrain which will give it a slight performance advantage over the all-wheel-drive NSX.

Let's take a look back at the C6 Mk1, which produced 400 horsepower. It was released in early 2004 when the Ferrari 360 Modena was just heading out of production. The C6 Mk2 was later released in late 2007 with 430 horsepower, matching slightly closer to the Ferrari F430 (which had 483 hp, but significantly less torque). Then came the C7, released in late 2012 with 455 horsepower, and it will remain at that output for all its seven years until the release of the C8. Unlike the base C6 which wasn't much slower than the 360 or F430, the base C7 fell far behind the mid-engine Ferrari equivalent, the 458 Italia.

The C6 and C7 also had 'super' versions to remain comparable to the Best of Europe. The C6 Z06 model produced 505 horsepower in early 2005, the C6 ZR1 made 638 in early 2008, the C7 Z06 made 650 in early 2014, and the C7 ZR1 made 755 in late 2017.

Considering GM's progressive and significant improvement with the C8, it should eclipse the 15-year-old C6 Z06 by 20 horsepower. The Z51 version will increase it from the base 525 to 550 horsepower. Those 25 ponies are a massive improvement compared to the C6 Mk2's 6 and the C7's 5-horsepower difference between Base and Z51.

At the time of this writing, my poll in regards to the C8's horsepower rating has received 430 votes within the first seventeen hours. The 29.8% who voted 500 horsepower and the 24.4% who voted 550 horsepower are close calls. Also, 19.1% voted for 600 horsepower and 26.7% voted for 650 horsepower.

It's a coincidence that the C8 Z51 will weigh 3,570 pounds per 550 horsepower, the C8 Z06 will weigh 3,825 pounds per 850 horsepower, and the C8 ZR1 Hybrid will weigh 3,800 pounds per 1,000 horsepower.

C8 Will Be Significantly Quicker Than C7

Based on the following specifications, the mid-engine C8 Stingray will hit 60 mph in 3.3 seconds with the 7-speed dual-clutch transmission and 3.6 seconds with the 7-speed manual transmission.

The Z51 will hit 60 mph in 3.1 seconds (3.0 in Grand Sport form) with the 7-speed dual-clutch transmission and 3.4 seconds (3.3 in Grand Sport form) with the 7-speed manual transmission.

The numbers (as listed above) are based on a weight distribution improvement from 50% front and rear to 45:55 front and rear.
