According to Carmag a report out of Germany suggests Volkswagen is developing a new budget-friendly hatchback dubbed the Golf Light. Many countries, including South Africa, fell in love with the Citi Golf (produced at Uitenhage from 1984 until 2009).
Carmag states that the Golf Light will be a budget-friendly hatchback to slot in above the little Up. Interestingly, aforementioned Up seems likely to go all-electric in its next generation.
The German publication’s rendering in the video (embedded above) illustrates that the Golf Light will feature a MK1-ish retro shape. Furthermore, we see it also incorporates elements of the later generation VW’s Golf.
In terms of power, the Golf Light is expected to be powered by a turbocharged 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol engine.
Carmag goes on to say that the inside will "use a fairly simple layout, ditching flashy options such as the digital cockpit in favour of more wallet-friendly solutions". Therefore, we can expect some plastic here and there.
