The Mercedes C 63 AMG "Edition 507" came close to the Black Series

Remember when you could get a relatively small estate car with a 6.2-litre V8? It's bonkers if you think about it, especially if your remember a certain special edition.

The current C 63 AMG uses a 4-litre twin-turbo V8, as do most AMGs, and while it produces more power than the previous gen it simply can't match the character of its NA large displacement predecessor.

The C 63 peaked in 2012 when Merc decided to make a Black Series version of it. Considering the Black Series that came before (SL 65) and after (SLS and GT), it's nice company to be in. Understandably it only came in coupé form due to its track-focused nature but how cool would an estate Black Series have been?

A year later Merc launched the C 63 AMG "Edition 507" which as you might have guessed had 507hp. This was a 50hp jump over the standard C 63 AMG putting it just 10hp shy of the Black Series. It came in all three body styles, they didn't quite look like the Black Series but they did share its bonnet with those distinct nostrils. The star of the show, at least in my mind, was of course the estate and despite the power deficit and additional weight, its 0-100kph of 4.3s was just a single tenth off the Black Series.

The power upgrade came thanks to forged pistons, connecting rods and a lightweight crankshaft straight out of the SLS. It also came with "composite" brakes as standard and "Edition 507" exclusive light-alloy wheels that look like proper performance parts. To further differentiate it from the ordinary C 63s it had matte grey stripes above the side sill panels.

This generation of the C-class is definitely my favourite, not just because of the engine but I find it the best-looking. I do like the current gen, it has presence but it's not as sharp and aggressive as the previous one. The other issue I have with it is that in my opinion it looks too similar to the E-class. It's not distinct enough.

We might never get an estate Black Series but the C 63 AMG "Edition 507" estate was not far off being one. If I was looking for a fast estate I would jump straight into the used car market and certainly have this beauty near the very top of my list.
