E09 3.0 CSL
Introduced in May 1972, the 3.0 CSL was a homologation special built to make the car eligible for racing in the European Touring Car Championship. 1,265 were built.
The "L" in the designation meant leicht (light). The lightness was achieved by using thinner steel to build the unit body and using aluminum alloy doors, bonnet, and boot lid.
The car has won several notable victories in its category of GT cars or endurance championship, since then the car was a legend for many years.
The M3 CSL
In 2003 BMW introduced the E46 M3 CSL, as its previous version the new csl was built using the best and most appropriate material to save weight, however BMW also use the radical reduction of weight by removing the radio from the car, finally BMW's experts succeeded in reducing the weight of the E46 M3 by more than 110 kilos.
The M3 CSL was unique and one of the best M3 ever built ( for me it’s the best one ) , the car was fitted by BMW's Sequential M Gearbox complete with Drivelogic and the M Track Mode. This special transmission ensures a very fast gearshift within just 0.08 seconds, like in a Formula 1 racing car, by means of paddles on the steering wheel. And like on the BMW M3 equipped with SMG, Launch Control integrated in the system enables the BMW M3 CSL to accelerate from a standstill all the way to top speed, without the driver having to shift gears or watch out for engine speed limits.
BMW 3.0 CSL Hommage Concept
The material used in the E09 1972 was aluminium , however today BMW engineer use carbon fibre, These high-strength fibres are even lighter and stronger than aluminium. And the BMW 3.0 CSL Hommage makes generous use of the high-tech composite to reinterpreting the concept of the original CSL.
The steering wheel and other elements are inspired by racing cars , the interior has carbon fiber seats with a white leather ,. For the seamless integration of the driver into the car, the designers extrapolated the principle of driver focus beyond the geometric form of the interior. In the BMW 3.0 CSL Hommage R, the idea of centring attention on the driver begins with his immediate surroundings. This new approach led the designers first to the driver's helmet, race suit and seat before moving onto the lines and surfaces of the interior.
Unfortunately the BMW 3.0 CSL homage remains a concept and will not be produced
M2 The next CSL model !
Recently, BMW CEO, said that the GTS moniker will be retired the iconic CSL will take its place.
The M2 CSL is said to follow the form of the E46 M3 CSL with a stripped-out interior, bucket seats and weight-saving carbon fiber parts.
