The curbs of the Yas Marina circuit have been smoothed
Their conformation was deemed too dangerous for the pilots
Among the various changes made on the Yas Marina circuit for the last Formula 1 Grand Prix of the 2021 season, there was the creation of special curbs inserted on the new turn 5. The peculiarity of these structures is that the upper part is pyramid-shaped to prevent the cars from excessively escaping from the circuit, keeping as much as possible inside it.
This solution had raised many doubts both to the FIA and to the teams, as they fear that their height could damage both the tires and the bottom of the cars if they were to inadvertently pass over them. In the end, after much discussion, it was decided today to smooth the inner part of the curb to make contact with the cars more sustainable and the various teams were required to increase tire pressure for the same reason.
Although the modification, the drivers are still not convinced of its effectiveness, also because the race promises to be very close and the excursions outside the corner number 5 are not to be excluded. After qualifying, the race marshals could comment on a further lightening of the curb, but it is not certain that it will happen.
