In 1979, the General Lee overtook the Striped Tomato as America's tv pinup car when it appeared for the first time in The Dukes of Hazzard, CBS's brand new action-comedy. The opening credits of the show saw Bo and Luke Duke's 1969 Dodge Charger "General Lee" leaping like a salmon through the air - several times in fact.

For these opening shots, the car had to have several hundred pounds of cement in its trunk. Earlier jumps had gone badly because the Charger was too front-heavy.

During the 147 episodes spanning 7 seasons, a hell of a lot of '69 Chargers were destroyed in filming, some sources place the figure at over 300!

At least once, a Charger was wrecked by accident due to an actor losing control of the car. Caught on film, the accident was worked into the plot and made the final cut.
