It's interesting; I started this TRIBE because I wanted to hear other people's personal fantasy garages, but just as importantly I wanted to hear dreams that were achievable as well as fantastical, maybe even the stories of people who have found that perfect blend and share it. As I have pondered more variations and talked to friends that are making choices to buy cars I have found that they are making the same buying decision twice. That is to say that they are buying two sensible cars with as many seats and doors as their pride will allow and the same again for the size of the boot. If you have two cars to buy, why not take that opportunity to make a paired decision. That way you drive whatever makes sense that day or makes most fun... Then, of course, the final theme arises: price. There are other things that some of us would rather spend money on, such as a holiday or more of this or a new shower... blah blah blah. So this is our first PTCG-2P (Perfect Two Car Garage 2 Person). And what better way to kick it off than to make a cheap one... This should cost, all up, $60k - $70k AUD or about 45 to 50k US. It gets you an SUV and a four seat sports car. Perfect for a 4 person family. As long as you're willing to make a few sacrifices for convenience.
99 - 04 Porsche 911 Carrera S (996)
I have to say, each of the garages I've created to date have included a Porsche. I definitely need to strike out a little more in imagination. Having said that this was selected not for badge or brand, instead it was selected because it is the Porsche 911 that everyone loves to hate. I admit that it is not the prettiest of the 911s. It may even be the ugliest... No it IS the ugliest. But this works in your favour. The Porsche 911 Carrera S (996) goes like the clappers and being so unloved it's a car that is surprisingly cheap within the general 911 market. It has 2 + 2 configuration, which means that you can move your mates or your kids around on short trips with relative ease, though I wouldn't recommend longer ones. You have the fun and the limited practicality. So now for the serious side of the equation.
03 - 08 Lexus RX350 (XU30)
The Lexus RX is the iconic sensible car. Spacious, drives like a cloud, great appointments for it's era and is seriously practical. The XU30 model's styling is a little outdated, but I still enjoy the look for some odd reason. I can't quite put my finger on the reason why. There really is no amazing reason why this car should be on this list over any other except..... Price. Lexus's have a bad habit of plummeting values and this really means you have a great opportunity to purchase a vehicle that is hugely reliable and makes holiday's, trips to the country, trips to your local big box hardware store a total breeze. Could serve as the boat 'tractor' if you are so inclined.
I really don't see this as the perfect combination. None ever would be really. Sometimes it's the faults that make the car so amazing right? So why would a pair of cars be any different. This was designed as a proof of concept of the PCTG-2P with three pillars to guide me. Practicality, Fun, and Price packaged into group buying decision and I think it has served it's purpose. I hope this encourages people to consider buying vehicles in this way, rather than to make largely the same decision twice, rather than two people each buying a single car. You should have two people buying two cars they both want and need together.
