The fastest production car up Pikes Peak? Somehow it's the Bentley Continental
At this year's Pikes Peak races Bentley's new Continental GT was the fastest production car ever to climb the famous summit.
At the wheel was New Zealand's very own Rhys Millen who was able to pilot the Bentley to this interesting record.
Now you may be wondering, how is a heavy Bentley luxury coupe the fastest car up Pikes Peak? Well, part of it obviously is obviously down to Rhys who's a very successful driver at this dangerous mountain, and the rest goes to the car's remarkable performance and ability to manage its weight.
In truth, holding the production car lap record at Pikes Pike is like holding the record for the fastest hundred-meter sprint while running backwards – sure it's interesting but there are not many people doing such a thing. Bentley sees this lack of competition as a way to get a huge marketing tag line for a little bit of effort, and now holds two course records: fastest SUV (the Bentayga) and fastest production car.
That said, the Conti's record-breaking run was a full 8 seconds faster than the previous record, which was set by a Porsche 911 Turbo - not to be sniffed at. It's certainly an incredible achievement - and the POV footage of the run shows just how treacherous the course is.
