The Fiat 500 Action- is it an option
Short answer-Yes
The automotive industry is currently going through a monumental change away from the internal combustion engine, a sad day for petrolheads, but, while some brands such as Porsche have decided to go the way of Synthetic fuel a vast majority of manufacturers including Fiat have decided that their future involves electric cars a future we see once again with the new Fiat 500 action, with this way of transportation looking more and more like reality with electric cars constantly getting cheaper. With a price of only 23,495 pounds, the 500 certainly isn’t expensive so it seems to be the most logical way to buy into the electric car market. But This raises the question of, is it? Or are you better off with another brand
I want to talk a bit more about the price because like I said earlier at 23,495 pounds it is one of the cheapest electric cars currently on the market only 1,505 pounds more than the dreaded and tasteless second-generation Nissan Leaf(2018 pricing) but, don’t be fooled by the price and think it is just a bare car because as standard you get sophisticated features such as an E-Call SOS system, digital instrument cluster and a keyless go but I think the most amazing feature is the range because while some car manufactures think 81 miles is enough, Cough Smart Fortwo Cough, Fiat has taken the time to develop a good battery range which is something I want to talk about next.
Battery life is something that a lot of car manufacturers struggle with, however, the 500 is the first cheap electric car, that I'm aware of, that comes with a practical battery range for daily driving with the official figures reading 159km around town and 118.1km combined range thanks to the standard EV one-pedal system, However, I am rather skeptical about the brochure since Fiat once owned 90% percent of Ferrari which has/had an incredibly optimistic speedometer. I know Fiat now only has a ten percent stake in the Ferrari brand, however, that Italian ingenuity is contagious, I'm not saying it's just Italian car manufacturers but it is where it's most known.
Quality, is a word that is not always translated to Italian with a lot of automobile manufacturers in the region producing cars that are stunning to look at but have the interior trim fall off when you close the door, which is a slight oversight I’ll admit but over the years the Italians have gotten better at producing cars that stay together without superglue, but the Fiat 500’s quality is, from what I can see, is rather good its black fabric seats and dashboard provide a bit of style and more importantly comfort and the steering wheel looks high quality with the driver being able to turn up or down the stereo with a flip of their thumb thanks to the audio controls being placed on the steering wheel. You can also easily see the digital instrument cluster. However, with the goods, there have to be downsides for example when Top Gear reviewed the 500 they found that if you didn't get the radio pack for 850 pounds then “the infotainment screen is whatever size your phone is” and “the 500 has always felt like a car you sit on top of, and a redesign has not helped.” but these are both minor issues when you remember it's only 23 grand a price most competitors can’t beat.
Italian cars may have been some of the most unreliable cars on the planet but they do know how to make some real rocket ships for example Ferrari have won the 24hrs of Le mans an incredible eight times, speed pretty much runs in Italian cars formula with the country giving us cars such as the F40, Enzo, Stratos, and the Pagani Zonda type R and what Fiat has done is take all of this history all of this affection for speed and threw it out of their Turin window and created something spectacularly slow. With a 0-60 time of 9.5seconds and a top speed of just 84mph, it's unlikely to get any land speed records it also lacks refinement unlike other electric cars where you get your power all at once the Fiat gains speed at a steady but slow rate, a small price to pay I guess to get into the electric car market. But I still haven't answered the question I asked at the start but I feel I am now qualified to tell you that the Fiat 500 action is the most logical way into the EV market, I mean yes there are flaws but all in all, it’s a good little car and from what I can tell from reviews and brochures if you're looking for a small cheap EV look no further.
But I want to know what you think, is it a good car? Let me know in the comments
