Ford has finally taken the covers off of their new all electric SUV for 2021, the Mach-E. Before I unleash my fury regarding the vexing idea of an all electric SUV with a name ripped from one of the most iconic American muscle cars in history, let's go over the basics.
Power figures are actually pretty good with up to 459 horsepower available and 612 lb-ft of torque. Several reports have given a 0-60 sprint time under four seconds, maybe closer to three seconds. On one charge, buyers should expect 300 miles of range. Interestingly the price for the Mach-E should start around $43,895.
Okay, we've unpacked the specsheet and it looks fairly respectable. The price in particular already puts the Mach-E in a good position. However, its time to address the big, fat elephant in the room.
The Mach-E, for the more eagle eyed observers, takes its name from the Mach-1 Mustang from the 1960's and 70's. The Mach-E is formally called the Ford Mustang Mach-E, Esquire. This makes the Mach-E the first SUV, all electric, possibly all-wheel drive, four-door Mustang in history. Deep breaths everyone, Ford has a reason behind this blasphemy.
According to Ford, the Mustang name is meant to represent attainable performance. To their credit, that's promise Lee Iacocca intended to fulfill to the enthusiast community with the first Mustang in 1964. So points to Ford for that. However, this is an all electric SUV we're talking about here. Why on Earth is it being marketed as a Mustang?
There are two questions we need to ask ourselves here. Is the Mach-E the right move for Ford right now and was it smart for them to advertise it as a Mustang? Begrudgingly, the answer to both of those questions is yes. The Mach-E is furthering Ford's strategy of moving most of their investments over to SUV, crossover and truck production. They are doubling down on the latest trend taking over the mainstream automotive market.
Labeling the Mach-E as a Mustang was also a genius move on Ford's part. It sickens me to say it, but performance SUVs are a huge trend right now. Buyers want something that can haul all of their crap but have a "sporty" attitude. Think about the Porsche Macan Turbo, the Ford Edge ST or any of the other "engaging and sporty" SUVs available today. They sell like hotcakes. Not only is Ford putting out a forward thinking, economically sound, sporty SUv with ties to one of the U.S.'s automotive legends is a no-brainer. How impressed do you think all of the other people at the outdoor mall will be when you pull up in your all electric "Mustang", kids in tow?
It really does pain me to say that the Mach-E was a brilliant move by the blue oval. The ideology is something I can agree with. Let automakers push out electric SUVs so the real heroes can keep making red-blooded track killers in the basement. Why they had to tie the Mustang to the Mach-E, I'll have no idea. I'm sure some marketing executives who make my current salary in an early lunch break deemed it a great idea. I'll hand it to the people over at Ford, they built a great looking, forward thinking SUV that will sell like nobody's business. But, and to quote "The Godfather", "Look how they massacred my boy!"
