The Genius of Jim Bamber

Possibly the most iconic motoring related cartoonist to ever live.

Autosport readers over the years will remember many great contributions to the magazine. Whether it was Mark Hughes breaking down the week's event as editor, the legendary "Fifth Column" by Nigel Roebuck or even Giorgio Piola's beautiful technical drawings.

Many Autosport readers would have been lovers of the great "Catchpole and the F words" cartoons. For me, from the point I started reading the magazine in 1997 one name always stuck in my head; Jim Bamber. For over 25 years he created a sense of curiosity, intrigue and mischief every week. The yearly "The Pits" specials were a must have for any fan of his work.

Racing heroes

This is posted directly from the Jim Bamber site (www.jimbamber.co.uk/aboutus), just to give you an idea of how much the man loved his motorsport and sharing his gift in aid of the greater community.

In addition to his cartoon work Jim was keen to build this superb, limited edition collection of models as a lasting tribute to his racing "Heroes".

He also wanted to support a charity with it and the idea quickly won the support of all featured drivers and teams, who gave their permission for each edition free of charge.

The first charity to benefit from the collection was the Grand Prix Trust (Previously the Grand Prix Mechanics Charitable Trust), of which Sir Jackie Stewart is Chairman.

The collection also supports the Motorsport Safety Fund and the Instituto Ayrton Senna.

Sadly Jim is no longer with us, but the art he left behind is a must see for all motorsport fans. He did inspire a new generation of illustrators to keep up the spirit that endeared him to the motorsport world.
