The Grand Tour Series 2?

As we keep seeing the question, here are some musings and a guesstimate

What we know

1) The Terrific Trio are contracted for 36 episodes over 3 years;

2) Series 1 started in November and consisted of 12 (counting Beach (Buggy) Boys as one programme) episodes;

3) The most highly regarded studio/tent segments, historically, of the Holy Trinity have been Christmas Gift Ideas. The most highly regarded films have been specials;

4) Given that the only way to watch the lads is an Amazon Prime subscription, Amazon, as a retailer, will probably be looking to capitalise from a larger membership base as the free, fast shipping is quite an incentive to use Amazon for other purchases. November-December-January is critical for a retailer.

Therefore

It is fair to estimate, absent of any other information, that the second series will probably start sometime in November, run for 12 episodes and the interim will be used to film, edit and perfect the video segments which must be in place for the tent shooting, shoot the tent segments and put it all together.

This may be so wrong as to make all other wrong things look just a bit misguided but it's the best we mere mortals can estimate right now.

  • Apart from a few things, I loved the first season of The Grand Tour. The one thing I didn't like was the operation training in episode 2. It felt like a Family Guy episode. Way too forced and very lacking of cars, which was odd. The good old challenges are better suited at entertaining. Also, I hope that Celebrity Braincrash won't return because it isn't funny anymore. They should use that time for the other segments, or come up something else. I think it would be great if in each episode one of the presenters has to do something they don't want to do, like James participating in the "spinning" motorsport. The other thing thing they should fix is The American. I think that he can work but forcing him to do joke after joke is annoying. It's better to let him do less, like a joke or two, and maybe include him in other segments so that the audience can connect more with him. Anyway, those are the things I thought were not the strongest in the first season. Other than that, it was epic. I hope they'll do more challenges in the second season because those have always been the funniest segments the guys did.

    • Agree with everything you said except episode 2. It's actually a bit funnier if you have seen Edge of Tomorrow because they make a few references to it. It's not very relevant but they always joke about how it's not really a car show anymore....

    • You are right on. I don't care for the stereotypical American driver with the fake dismissal of none V-8 muscle cars. As a real American, I know that we love European cars and English humor. .. but that obviously Clarkson written segment is...

  • I would just like to point out, for all the people doubting the relevance of the new show in regards to how good it is compared to the old show, that with the time they had to put together what they did I think the first series turned out great. Some of the jokes were a bit over the top to the point of being a bit corny... but to reiterate, accomplishing what they did with the time they had was a miraculous feat and I presume the second series will feel much more like the three stooges back at it again... it will be fine tuned, and all the bits that the BBC never let them do will be out of their system I imagine. I hope there's more actual car reviews and less killing of celebrities.

  • Hammond posted on Instagram that it starts on November 19th... Much easier than using all that energy to guess...

    • Two things:

      1) November 19th is a Sunday (thanks, Hayley);

      2) That Instagram account is not verified. The chances of any of them posting the start date before Amazon firm up the release schedule and marketing strategy are almost...

  • Had only a passing Knowledge of the previous series on the British network that can't be named. Happen upon GT as I was browsing Amazon Prime. Fully on the BandWagon now and looking forward to the shenanigans the three boys will get into next season!!!

  • Could we get a real cheap car challenge instead of buying 3 nice unreliable cars and deciding that you don't want to follow through with your original plan
