The Heart of Motion. Why did I choose that name for all my car work? To answer that is very simple. I have a few non petrolhead friends, and like most of them they cannot find cars to be pretty or a work of art. I heard a saying and I stand to be corrected and it is this, cars cannot be art, because for it to be art it must have no purpose other than itself. It was after hearing this that I began my quest to show people just how beautiful cars can be and I think I just may have found the perfect car and brand that embodies the name Heart of Motion.

Enter the world of Singer. Not to be mistaken for the sewing machines mom and dad use to have but the car. Started 9 years ago in 2009 by Rob Dickinson, former member of the band Catherine Wheel, the company rebuilds, customises and restores old classic Porsches. The name Singer pays tribute to Porsche engineer Norbert Singer, as well as acknowledging Dickinson's previous career as a vocalist. The Singers motto is "everything is important", a reference to their design philosophy where none of the car is overlooked and even the smallest details are enhanced beautifully.

Singer mainly specialise on something called the "re-imagined" 911, which is a heavily modified car based on the Porsche 964. Pretty much all the bodywork is replaced with the highest grade carbon fiber body panels and the engine is reworked by engine manufacturers such as Cosworth or Williams for more power. The long hood of classic 911's replace the short hood of the Porsche 964 while relocated fuel and oil filler caps are a nod to older Porsche race cars of days past.

The Singers instrument panel is colored in Singer Orange and revs up to 11, a reference to the rock band Spinal Tap, however for those wandering the official redline is 7900rpm which is still pretty incredible if you ask me.

The interiors of Singers are something to marvel and drool over. By taking the motto of reimagining for the 21st century, no stone is left unturned. The classic Porsche gets lightweight pedals and instruments, polished knobs and buttons, ultra premium leathers interwoven and stitched perfectly while still keeping the car retro and vintage. The modernism touches and telltale signs are the carbon fibre and custom made panels replaced from the old plastics and metals. Singer have literally taken the existing and simply made it better. Perfect is an understatement.

Singer engines are as original as the day it left the factory, with the benefit of modern technology and better engineering for consistency and more importantly reliability. Singer build cars that people can use everyday, on the track or as a weekend toy. It started with the Porsche 964-based 3.6-liter, which eventually evolved into a Cosworth developed 3.8. But for its last few builds, Singer went to Ed Pink Racing and produced 4 litres of pure masterpiece.

For its latest creation, singer went to new levels of extreme and partnered with Formula 1 brand Williams Advanced Engineering, Michelin, Brembo, BBS Motorsport and others to offer new “lightweight services” for owners of classic Porsche 911s to create the ultimate classic reimagined. The new 4 litre air-cooled flat-six, has no turbochargers, just pure power, all 500hp of it. Revving to a dizzy 9,000 RPM it sounds like a proper GT3 race car all thanks to cylinders and pistons with titanium con-rods, aluminum throttle bodies with carbon fiber trumpets, an Inconel and titanium exhaust system, a carbon air box, an enlarged engine cooling fan, and other modifications made of materials only found in laboratories.

The new Singer DLS - Dynamic Lightweight Study

When one of Singer’s customers asked for lightweighting and performance modifications for his 1990 Porsche 964, Singer responded by working with Williams for two whole years on what it calls a “Dynamics and Lightweighting Study.” The idea was to make 964s better handling, lighter and quicker through the air with aerodynamic optimisations. The results of this obsessive behaviour resulted in a vehicle weight as low as 988Kg, thanks to use of magnesium, titanium and carbon fiber.

Want one? Well far as we know, only 75 lucky human beings will get the chance to own a DLS and even if you are one of the lucky few it will set you back a pretty penny. How much exactly? Well no exact price has been given, we hear that one will set you back just over $1.8 Million. While that is the actual price of what the engineering and parts cost with no markup we do think that this is the ultimate version of the best sports car ever made. Worth it? Of course yes.
