The Hopium Machina is the French hydrogen-powered beauty hoping to topple Tesla

Well, good luck with that. It looks good, though

If I had a dollar for every time I read about a new up-and-coming EV brand trying to take on Tesla I would now be able to afford an actual Tesla. The good news is this electric car comes with two key features: it has a cool name and it looks great. Meet the French Hopium Machina.

That's the end of the good news I'm afraid because the Machina is only planned to enter production in, you might want to put the kettle on, 2026. Yes. Oliver Lombard, Hopium founder, said they have been working on the project for two years and "it has reached sufficient maturity for us to communicate on its launch. Hopium aims to become the global benchmark brand for hydrogen mobility with the objective of achieving a turnover of 1 billion euros by 2030".

The Machina is around the same size as a Tesla Model S and it is expected to cost anywhere between €130,000 and €170,000. The Machina, which is technically a hydrogen-powered vehicle, will pack 500 hp and at least 500 miles of range on a single tank of hydrogen.

I'll be honest. It does sound a bit like... vapourware, yes, and also interesting. And then again the car industry is changing so we can definitely expect more unknown brands to come up with their own cars.

  • The only problem is that the name is a drug (assuming the h is silent)
