The incredible Hulk - Jeep's iconic superhero

IT’S not often an SUV, or in this case a rugged off-road ready version of said vehicle type, jumps straight to the top of your favourites list. But the 2020 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon has done just that.

The big green beast, or as we came to affectionately know him, the Incredible Hulk, is an American icon, having been first launched back in 1986. Now in its fourth generation, the Wrangler name is known and loved globally.

The Rubicon is what you might best describe as the angry variant, complete with bonnet bulge, flared fenders and an aggressive stance. Its muscular looks are timeless, and it’s set up to battle anything; rain, hail or shine.

On your own, or assisted, once you have climbed into the driver’s seat, your cabin is filled with an array of gadgets, features and buttons. The Wrangler just naturally induces a sense of fun and adventure for all its occupants.

Use the remote start or push-to-start and fire up the 147kW 2.2-litre Multijet II turbo diesel engine. The Rubicon’s 8-speed automatic gearbox transitions smoothly as you enjoy your daily commute or traverse an off-roading adventure.

With prices starting from $68,950 (plus on-roads) for the diesel model, you might be wondering how you’ll swing it past the minister for war and finance. Just shoot her (or him) a list of all the standard features for full please, please, please justification.

Now we could roll out the entire list, but that would just eat up your valuable reading time, and you might take a nap, which wouldn’t be good for you, or us, so instead we’ll just delve over some of the highlights.

There’s DAB+ digital radio, plus all the usual audio goodness and satellite navigation, a 7.0-inch multi-view driver information display, a theft deterrent system and alarm, front and rear park assist, adaptive cruise control, and four airbags.

Heated mirrors, power windows, a bunch of USB ports and two 12V auxiliary power outlets to complete a quick glance at some of the standout features. You can even fold down the windscreen and remove the full metal doors if you want to get really wild.

Jeep has provided you more than enough equipment to take on the roads less travelled, and test the limits of your 4×4 beast. It’s got a shed-tonne of goodies for the dirty stuff, including a Rock-Trac 4×4 system and Tru-Lok front and rear locking diffs.

There’s a skid plate under the fuel tank, transfer case and transmission, in case you go proper bush bashing, heavy duty suspension and gas shocks, and a heavy duty rock slider with step assist.

You’ll also have support from hill start assist and descent control, traction control and electronic roll mitigation. Don’t fret either, driving around town on the actual roads is good too. Even rolling on BF Goodrich 255/75 muddies the in-cabin road noise is pretty good.

We should mention too, there’s a 209kW 347Nm 3.6-litre Pentastar V6 with ESS engine option available too. Our test vehicle, which had the smaller power plant, returned a combined fuel economy number of 9.2-litres/100km.

Jeep claims 7.5. It’s got a 3-star ANCAP safety rating (about the same as a Ford Mustang), and a 2,495kg braked towing capacity. The 2020 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon also bears Jeeps ‘Trail Rated’ badging.
