The Largest event of it's kind, King of the Hammers
The largest off road competition event in the USA took place in Johnson Valley, CA the first week of Feb. 2019 and is the 13 running of the Nitto Tire King of the Hammers Powered by Optima Batteries. The grassroots event is not so grass roots anymore and features UTV racing, Ultra 4 and new for 2019 was the T1 class which has rules equivalent to the better known S.C.O.R.E. Trophy Trucks that often run in Baja Mexico. What separates the King of the Hammers ULTRA4 from the typical off road desert race rocky sections that are very technical and can be devastating to the vehicles. All classes in the weeklong event are subjected to competing not only in the sand and rough desert roads but also need to pass through extreme sections of huge rocks. This requires specially built vehicles known as rock crawlers. The sum of the competitive course means teams must be very competitive in a variety of challenges. Competing on a course that has fast dry lake bed section as well as sections for crawling and everything in between is what makes this event so unique. Just being fast on the lake bed or a good rock crawler will not win you this race. Specially built vehicles known as Ultra4 have simple rules and in essence they are: "Hammerking has established a racing class known as the ULTRA4 class. The defining characteristic of this class is that all cars must be capable of 4-wheel drive. Beyond that, the class is unlimited. These cars come in all shapes and sizes and are capable of speeds over 100+ MPH and still contain gear ratios as low as 100 to 1 for technical rock crawling.". The event hosted more than 50,000 international fans that camped in Hammertown, the temporary city in the desert erected for the event, and over 2,000,000 you tube viewers during the event. While this year’s event saw the coldest temps the events has ever seen it did not stop fans and teams enjoying themselves.
