The last great spine-tinglers

It's a bittersweet symphony - automotive style...

As much of a cliché as it is to describe the sound of a car as "spine-tingling", there really is no other adjective that can accurately convey the implied sensation. After all, the feeling of when your entire central nervous system begins to froth beneath your skin in response to the swelling sound of an engine revving can only really be described one way. For those who are lucky enough to know exactly what it's like to experience the caressing hand of excitement stroke her way along the centre of your back, you'll know that there's no other feeling quite like it.

While it may appear disappointing to see the phrase "spine-tingling" as a cliché, in actual fact, it's something of a blessing. For the frequent use of the phrase is commensurate to the need to use it; furthermore, if it wasn't trite, the cars that sound epic enough to beg for its use wouldn't exist.

With the incoming death of internal combustion however, I feel we will find the use of the term "spine-tingling" diminishing through the muted turbo revolution, and into the age of silent nothingness. And as the ole' saying goes: nothing is real until it's gone.

For this blog then, I thought I'd compile a list of what I like to think of as the last great spine-tinglers. The cars must be fairly recent, must be road legal from their inception, and sound akin to a divine orgasm. The cars I include will not be ordered, because this blog is simply about amassing a collection of greats – rather than trying to objectively arrange sound quality on the basis of subjective nuances.

There is a twist to this blog however. Sound is fantastically similar to aesthetic beauty in the sense that it epitomises itself better than any tortured metaphor ever could. So, in a welcome change to my normal blogging format, each entry on this list will be delivered simply with a sample of their singing voice, rather than a paragraph of pointless romantic drivel that tries and fails miserably to describe what words cannot. And with that, let's start this almighty automotive symphony! HEADPHONES ADVISED!!

Lamborghini Huracan Performante

Porsche 991.2 GT3

Aston Martin Vantage GT12

Ferrari 458 Speciale

Lamborghini Aventador SV

Jaguar F-Type SVR

Lexus LF-A

Ford Shelby Mustang GT350

Ferrari F12 tdf

Aston Martin Vantage GT8
