Porsche is all about iconic numbers. Not only 9-1-1 but the most famous sequence when it comes to racing is the 9-1-7. In 1971 the new "shark fins" on the tail of the Porsche 917 KH gave the car greater directional stability and reduced wind resistance. The 917 KH was also the first Porsche with a magnesium tubular frame to be used in a race. This allowed Porsche engineers to install a larger fuel tank and still be within weight limits. The 917 below raced to victory in the 1971 24-hour race with an average speed of 138.1 mph and a total distance of 3,315 miles. With the improved performance of the 917, the drivers Gijs van Lennep and Helmut Marko set two records that would stand unbeaten for 39 years. #porsche #porsche917
