The Lucid Air is faster than a Tesla Model S around Laguna Seca
They just set a new record
The high-performance Lucid Air from California has been a long time in the making. The company began working on battery technology in 2007 and introduced their first prototype, called Atieva Atvus, in 2016. They changed the name shortly thereafter and four years later we finally get to meet the production version of their +1000-hp creation.
Lucid claim the range-topping variant of the Air has an EPA-rated range of 517 miles on a full charge and they've actually already demonstrated that it can be achieved when they drove a fully-functional prototype from San Francisco to Los Angeles and back on a single charge.
Now, this being a high-performance, long range electric sedan, their natural competitor is Tesla and in order to make sure the world knows they're serious about it, they're trying everything they can to hammer the point home. First, they beat the Model S' quarter-mile time and now, the tri-motor Lucid Air has also beat the Model S' record around Laguna Seca Raceway in California.
The Air completed a lap in 1 minute 33 seconds flat, marginally faster than the Model S, which did it in 1:36.555. Full disclosure, the lap was timed by The Kilowatts, who also posted the video that you see here, so we need Lucid to confirm this and make it official but 3.5 seconds is a lot and that would indicate the Air is faster even factoring in an inevitable margin of error. Let's wait and see.
