The Lucid Air is faster than a Tesla Model S around Laguna Seca

They just set a new record

The high-performance Lucid Air from California has been a long time in the making. The company began working on battery technology in 2007 and introduced their first prototype, called Atieva Atvus, in 2016. They changed the name shortly thereafter and four years later we finally get to meet the production version of their +1000-hp creation.

Lucid claim the range-topping variant of the Air has an EPA-rated range of 517 miles on a full charge and they've actually already demonstrated that it can be achieved when they drove a fully-functional prototype from San Francisco to Los Angeles and back on a single charge.

Now, this being a high-performance, long range electric sedan, their natural competitor is Tesla and in order to make sure the world knows they're serious about it, they're trying everything they can to hammer the point home. First, they beat the Model S' quarter-mile time and now, the tri-motor Lucid Air has also beat the Model S' record around Laguna Seca Raceway in California.

The Air completed a lap in 1 minute 33 seconds flat, marginally faster than the Model S, which did it in 1:36.555. Full disclosure, the lap was timed by The Kilowatts, who also posted the video that you see here, so we need Lucid to confirm this and make it official but 3.5 seconds is a lot and that would indicate the Air is faster even factoring in an inevitable margin of error. Let's wait and see.

  • Great video of you want to listen to wind noise and watch a camera pointed at the sky

  • The model s was never meant to be a track car so I don’t really see point of it but competition is good I guess

    • yup. they're basically flexing. That's really all there is to it if we're honest

  • Well this Lucid has already won the whole battle with Tesla

But Tesla seems not to give up at any cost LOL

    • the truth is, all levity aside, Tesla is miles ahead of everyone else in the EV game, for a variety of reasons. But I have to say I do like where Lucid is going, they seem to be doing things the right way

    • Yeah and I think it's the first electric car in my own opinion to have more than 500 miles in a single charge

  • I would buy it over the Tesla for the same reason I always buy a car; because I like how it looks. I’ll never drive it on a track and I only ever go a bit over the speed limit, that I’ll admit anyway. The range is good too, but I don’t think it quite knocks my favourite electric car off the top spot; the Jag. Not that I can afford any of these and not that there’s a charging point anywhere near my home yet. Waiting. (For both).

  • Plaid did it in 1:30 and Tesla thinks they can shave off another 3 seconds.
