The Maserati MC20 gets Aria kit conversion, and it looks absolutely bewitching

A worthy successor to the legendary MC12?

Maserati are a company that truly embody the Italian way: panache, comfort, and mindboggling speed. And in a typically Italian manner, they like to take their oh so sweet time developing their cars, especially the fast ones. Over the last few years, the Modenese firm have held back on releasing any meaningful fighter pilot-esque, track-munching supercars.

Instead, they've opted to focus on a more relaxed range, that includes the Quattroporte, the Ghibli, and (to everyone's surprise) the Levante SUV. Their last proper speedster came way back in 2004, in the form of their sublime MC12 - a car which was perfectly capable of going toe-to-toe with one of Ferrari's greatest hits, the Enzo. But now, they're back with the MC20, and hopefully this car will help reclaim some of their past glories that have been lost in recent years.

It really is beautiful, isn't it? It's hard, really, to try and imagine how something so elegant can be further improved in any way. But this is the world of cars, and someone, somewhere, will always have a design, courtesy of a light bulb moment whilst on their toilet seat, that can do just that. Siim Pärn is a part-time automotive designer who's contribution to the motoring world is growing by the day.

Some of his past work, such as this throwback Ford Escort Cosworth render, has gained widespread attention on platforms like DriveTribe and HotCars. Like many of us, he's just a boy with big dreams, and if his most recent conceptual design for the forthcoming MC20 is anything to go by, his future looks bright. Very bright.

I'll admit that some, if not most of the time, adding flared arches and ludicrously oversized spoilers to a brand new supercar, isn't the smartest thing to do. It's a gamble. But Siim's subtle additions, and gentle mechanical upgrades, really have hit a sweet spot with the MC20. The heavily track-focused kit, which will drastically improve the natural aerodynamic capabilities of the car, and will no doubt be paired with generous internal upgrades, makes Maserati's new flagship model all the more dramatic.

And in case any of those lucky people who've put their name down for an MC20 are looking and licking their lips at the possibility of taking their car through Siim's Aria conversion, think again. This upgrade will be limited to just 25 units, so anyone who IS interested will need to act before they think - after all, it's not everyday that a sure-fire investment like this comes to fruition.

The kit adds a full carbon-fibre front lip, rear splitter, side skirts, as well as elements of the sought after material to a menacing set of front canards. An equally fancy rear spoiler will aid in hunkering the car to the ground at speeds, ensuring it remains sticky and constantly ready to attack any approaching corners. These additions are joined by a roof scoop, which sits right in the firing line of a blue pin-stripe that runs the length of the car.

Given modern day advancements and breakthroughs in technology and engineering, you can almost guarantee that the standard MC20 will run rings around its predecessor, the MC12. With the incorporation of Siin's Aria aero kit, however, you'd stand in good stead in betting anyone that the MC20 goes from an MC12 killer, to an outright hypercar killer.

  • I don't want to be the hater here and it really looks cool, but...

Once you're calling yourself a "Design House" and you're really planning on selling an "Aero kit", then details should matter. For example: the roof scoop on the front and rear renders is mighty different from the side render. And the scoop in front of the rear wheel is just brushed in with Photoshop. So considering these details, my conclusion is that this is nothing more than a pretty drawing. There haven't been any tests that this will actually improve aero. I hope that I'm wrong, but this might become a Mansory-type dress up kit that will actually hurt performance.
