the Mercedes S70 AMG: The ultimate continent crusher for mobsters.
The W140 Mercedes S600 was a remarkable car in itself being filled with world firsts in safety and comfort like double glazing which massively improved soundproofing and BAS (or Brake Assist System) which kicked in during emergency maneuvers to maximize braking power. The S600 was also a class leader in performance with 394HP and 570nm torque from its 6 liter V12 and it was capable to do the 0-100 sprint in 5.6 seconds and (derestricted) would go all the way to 288km/h which was unheard of at the time for a car that was nicknamed ''the Cathedral'' because of its size and 2000kg of wood, leather and luxury. In comparison the Ferrari f355 had 380hp and did the 0-100 sprint in 4.7 seconds and kept going to 295km/h.
But this was before AMG got their hands on this engine.
When AMG got their hands on the M120 engine they did what AMG does best, they made it bigger. They bored it out to a unholy 7 liters increasing the power to 496HP and 719nm torque. A common misconception is that mercedes made a 123 s70 models but they only made a 123 7.0 litre engines, which all found their homes in different cars. This engine found its home in cars like the Pagani Zonda C12-S, the Pagani Zonda GR and the Mercedes SL70 AMG (with different set ups and tunes ofcourse). This engine was never supposed to go to the S-class so to get one of these monsters you first needed very deep pockets and connections high up in the mercedes hierarchy. Only then you could put in a special order for one of these beasts. its impossible to find specific numbers of how many S70s were ever produced but the estimates range between 15 and 18 of these cares being produced.
The s70 got a sportier bodykit from AMG and for wheels you could get the now iconic O.Z AMG Aero 3-piece wheels or the little less iconic AMG monoblock wheels. With its newfound power mated to a 5-speed automatic gearbox the S70 was able to do the 0-100 in 5,2 seconds and kept going all the way up to an insane 300km/h.
The S70 AMG was a car that demanded your attention with its sinister looks, and if you were fortunate enough to see one of these beasts in the flesh you knew that the guy in the back was someone who was not to be messed with.
