The most striking new cars priced below 50.000€

Not all new cars have to be boring, here are 5 good examples of truly unique and rather interesting new cars you can buy.

Modern cars have evolved dramatically over the last couple of decades, but while they have improved on safety, comfort, fuel economy and performance, they are lacking character. Especially with the massive demand for SUVs and Crossovers, finding a relatively affordable car with soul and personality is harder than ever, but still not impossible. Here I compiled a list containing the craziest and most unusual new cars you can buy for less than 50.000€.

5. The Morgan Plus 4

The Morgan Plus 4 is an ancient looking car, but it is actually a brand new vehicle. Morgan hasn’t changed its cars’ styling probably since the Interwar period… which is brilliant. The looks are partly responsible for the car’s immense charm and distinction, not only it is a truly beautiful piece of design, but it is an expert when it comes to attracting attention. Everybody turns their heads after this car and even the vintage car specialists want a slice of it.

Underneath the old and charming skin, the Plus 4 hides a modern engine sourced from Ford which produces a shy over 155hp. Not dramatic, but it doesn’t need to be. It is a convertible, and all the charm comes from simply cruising down the street -well below the speed limit- just by looking at the classic dashboard, having the hair blown by the wind and staring at the long bonnet. Objectively, it is terrible -it isn’t well put together, it doesn’t handle well, it isn’t refined and nor is it practical- but it is seductive and loveable, all for less than 45.000€.

4. The Ariel Atom

The Ariel Atom is one of the fastest new cars you can buy at this price point. The engine is borrowed from Honda, and it is the same 320hp unit found in the Civic Type R… It sounds good, but it is an astonishing figure when the weight is considered. Due to the lack of air conditioning, radio, fancy electronics and…well, bodywork, the Atom is insanely light, having just 595kg. That is 538hp per tonne, by comparison, a Bugatti Veyron has less than 500hp per tonne. As a result, it reaches 100km/h from a standstill in less than 3 seconds.

It is mind-blowingly quick, but the handling is even better. Few cars can reach this car’s level of precision, agility and grip. The driving experience is truly amazing, but compared to the previous Atom models, it actually rides brilliantly. I cannot say it is the best daily-driver's car, since it doesn’t even have doors or a windscreen, but from all the track-cars from this price point, it rides the best.

3. The Caterham Seven

The Caterham Seven is a new car which is inspired from a 50-year old Lotus design from racing. It is a great idea, because Caterham figured out that the only thing which doesn’t get dated or outperformed is lightness. The range kicks off with a 660cc Suzuki engine producing 80hp -costing less than 25.000€- and the hardcore version popping out more than 300hp from its supercharged 4-cylinder Ford engine. It is so light –it weighs just a shy over 500kg- that even the base model goes from 0-100km/h in 6.5 seconds.

But the most powerful one is insane, it is called 620 because it has 620hp/tonne, that is almost 100hp/tonne more than the Ariel Atom. The handling is extraordinary and the driving experience is even more intense than in the Atom, and it is so fast around the corners that it manages to outrun many supercars on the track. It also has some funny quirks, the windshield and the doors being optional and the fact that it can be built at home.

Caterham would just sell you the parts and an instruction manual –like in a Lego toy-car- and build it yourself. I personally adore this car and it is one my favourite cars ever built.

2. The Ariel Nomad

The Ariel Atom is the most capable car on the list. On one hand, it is a good track car. It comes with a 235hp Honda engine, and with the lightweight chassis and the lack of bodywork, it really feels faster than “235hp” sounds like. It only weighs 700kg. It is an amazing car to drive, having a cheer balance and excellent weight distribution, but above all, it feels connected to the driver and it really turns the trip into an engaging one.

Especially if there is a traffic jam, because you can take on the country road or even the hill. The Nomad is one of the most capable off road cars you can buy, mostly due to its mechanical simplicity, good off road tires and the utterly brilliant chassis. Wherever you go, it doesn’t matter if it is tarmac, dirt, snow or sand, this car will put a big smile on the driver’s face, all for less than 35.000€. It does struggle at weather proofing, though.

1. The Morgan 3-Wheeler

This is one of the craziest new cars on sale today, for many good reasons. For starters -as the name suggests- the 3-wheeler only has 3 wheels: 2 in front and one in the back. This car is the answer to the question no one has ever asked. Why have they done it? No idea, but it is brilliant. The driving experience doesn't get more unique than this, with its bathtub-like body, the V-twin cylinder engine with 80hp, the lack of roof, doors and.. apparently wheels.

Not only it is a cracker when it comes to engagement and fun, but furthermore, it is the best headturner. How often do you see a 3-wheeled car with bicycle-like wheels and an exposed V2 engine? And then comes the styling, which i think is exquisite. This really is one of the most astonishing and unique looking cars ever made, and I absolutely love it for it, and it only costs 34.000£ in the UK.
