The new BMW M4 but with E30 M3 styling

We should probably stop using Photoshop.

The E30 is the grandfather of the M3. With a 2.3 litre four-cylinder engine, the car produced a lively 143kW of power, which linked to a 5-speed manual and rear-wheel limited slip differential became an icon for the petrolhead.

The new G82 M4 on the other hand hasn’t been received so well. It’s the latest performance coupe to join the M car range, and to many, the design has taken a back-step with the larger kidney grille and omission of the traditional Hofmeister kink.

Playing around with Photoshop, we have managed to tack the E30’s front bumper, multi-spoke wheels and spoiler onto the latest G82’s chassis, resulting in a rather unusual muscular looking car. The Photoshop edit does have colour matching issues and thus may not be perfect, but we think it gives us an interesting glimpse into mixing contemporary and classic design.

  • It reminds me of a VW Corrado/Lancia Delta integrale front end and probably due to the stance of that generation of car.

    I do like it.

  • From a design standpoint, the poor chaps at BMW just don’t understand basic principles. The kidney grill is not only a poor ratio, but the size and orientation makes the front end look taller and narrower, which is not generally congruous with a sporting vibe. Plus, BMW has traditionally been for people like me who want a sporting car that can be driven daily without drawing too much attention or looking like a midlife crisis. The new grill is a midlife crisis writ large.
