The covers came off the brand new BT62 on Wednesday as the legendary Brabham name returned to motoring with the track-only hypercar.

David Brabham, son of three-time Formula 1 world champion Jack, said the car was "the next chapter in the evolving Brabham story" and insisted it was "a car truly worthy of carrying the iconic Brabham name.”

You can read all about the car here, but given the racing heritage of the Brabham name, and the fact that David himself is a Le Mans winner, it got us thinking about an idea we explored at Christmas.

Back then we looked at the evolution of the top level of endurance racing and lamented the departure of Porsche from the World Endurance Championship, leaving Toyota as the sole manufacturer in the LMP1 category.

Our solution to this was to reinvent a GT1 class of racing which would replace LMP1 - and would use the current crop of hypercars that manufacturers are already building.

To see what such a racing series would look like, we asked highly talented designer Marco Van Overbeeke to mock up six of these cars in racing liveries, which you can see below.

And with the reveal of the BT62, we now have another contender for our fantasy Le Mans field:

And our other potential competitors...

MERCEDES-AMG PROJECT ONE GT1

MCLAREN SENNA GT1

ASTON MARTIN VALKYRIE GT1

PORSCHE 918 GT1

KOENIGSEGG AGERA RS GT1

FERRARI LAFERRARI FXX K EVO GT1

And the full field lining up for the start:

What do you think of our series idea? And which car would you back for the win...?

  • We really need this to happen. LMP1 has become a farce with only one factory Hybrid competitor.

Also, what about the Apollo Intensa Emozione? Seems like another good competitor. Maybe even the Pagani Huayra BC.

    • Agreed. I think it would make the series much more appealing to a wider audience as well - and would give these cars more of a reason to exist!
