As if the Corvette Stingray wasn't crazy enough... here's the even crazier Z06

The new 2023 Corvette Z06 is here, and there are a few things that Chevy decided. They first decided that the 6.2L V8 from the regular C8 wasn't good enough. The available 495 horsepower also didn't fit the bill. So, instead of chucking on a supercharger and calling it a day, Chevrolet decided to make an all-new engine just for the Z06.

And that new engine is a monster: a 5.5L naturally-aspirated V8 producing 670 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque. For those curious, that's a 175 horsepower difference- (I emphasize this again) without the use of twin-turbos or superchargers.

But even that is mundane when compared to the noise that the new Z06 will make once you find that the tachometer revs all the way up to 8,600 rpm; all thanks to a new flat plane crankshaft.

The Corvette C8.R, the racing version of the C8, was referred internally at Chevrolet as the Z06 that hid in plain sight, as so much of the two cars are shared. For example, the chassis, engine architecture, and exterior proportions all take heavy inspiration from the C8.R.

In that respect, the new Z06 has some racing pedigree. So much so that the Z06 can be optioned with Brembo carbon-ceramic brakes, which sports larger front and rear Brembo rotors. To fit the new, wider 345-series tires, Chevrolet had to widen the fenders by 3.6 inches, making for a bolder look. Not only does that bolden the fenders, but it also helps improve traction; something the Z06 set out to do in the first place.

The new Z07 Performance package adds a series of track-minded upgrades to the regular Z06. Besides the Brembo carbon-ceramic brakes, you also get carbon fiber wheels which shed 41-pounds, and modifications to the Magnetic Ride Control (suspension). Though, the most notable features of the Z07 Performance Pack are the Michelin Sport Cup 2 R Zp tires that are built specifically for the Z06 and the crazy carbon fiber aero package, which gives a larger front splitter, front-corner dive planes, some underbody work to improve downforce, and of course, a carbon-fiber wing.

If you opt-out of the Z07 package, you still get an enhanced front splitter and a unique front spoiler, just not made out of carbon fiber. You also get bigger brakes with the Z06: 14.6 inches in the front and 15.0. inches in the back. Both of which are significantly bigger (2.0 inches larger in the front and 1.2 inches larger in the back)- just not as badass at the ones you get with the Z07 package.

Launch control, an electronic limited slip differential, and a fantastic Corvette C8 are all here to stay for the Z06. Pricing and 0-60 (mph) weren't published at the time of writing, but judging by the fact that the C8 Stingray can do 0-60 in 2.9 seconds, you can expect the Z06 to do that a tidbit faster.
