Jeep has presented its first electrified models for Europe with the Renegade 4xe and Compass 4xe. Both models, which will be built in the Italian Melfi factory in Basilicata, will be equipped with an 11.4 kWh battery pack. With these plug-in hybrids, the FCA group, which includes Jeep, is taking an important step towards achieving the current CO2 emissions of 95 grams of CO2 per kilometer.

Plug in Hybrid eAWD

With the new plug-in hybrid engines, Jeep is demonstrating the next steps in electric off-roading. The new eAWD mode is coupled with an automatic gearbox and an updated select terrain dial. It is possible to select the driving modes Auto, Snow, Mud & Sand and Rock for various surfaces. A new addition will be the Sport mode, which, depending on the version, will use the full 190 or 240 hp. With a 1.3 liter engine and two electric motors, the acceleration from 0-100 km / h will be don in 7.1 seconds for the Renegade S and 7.3 seconds for the Compass S.

A festival of colours

The new 4xe models can be identified by a blue e logo on the back. In addition, the new models will come with some new options for Jeep. For example, there is now a Drowsy Driver Detection System that alerts the driver when fatigue is setting in. Both models also come with an 8.4” touchscreen with Apple CarPlay or Android auto. There are also plenty of colours to choose from, as the Renegade gets no less than 18 different adventurously named colors. Alpine White, Colorado Red and Omaha Orange will also be featured on the Compass as well as 3 exclusive colours, Ivory Tri Coat, Blue Italia and Techno green.

Electric offroading

With the plug-in hybrids, Jeep doesn't only focus on the daily commute. Altough the 4xe's can drive 52 kilometers on electric power alone and have various energy saving driving modes. But this has not been at the expense of the Off-road capabilities of the Jeep's. It's four-wheel drive system is a combination of the combustion engine powering the front axle and 2 electric motors powering the rear. For example, the electric motors ensure that there is more torque to work with than with a conventional combustion engine! The 11.4 kWh battery pack can then be charged at home within 5 hours with the home-garden-and-kitchen socket (which by the way only needs to be done in an emergency) or with an easyWallbox within 2 hours.

Prices and delivery are not yet known at this time, just like the answer to the question: Will Jeep call its all-electric models Jeep-e's? We hope so.

  • Why hybrid? Just give it decent batteries and don't bother fitting a second engine in the thing. I honestly worry about this Company. They're intentionally staying behind the curve and will end up utterly irrelevant before they know it.
