The New Supra May Not Carry A Toyota Badge
Toyota is in the middle of a massive re-branding effort aimed to shed the company of its less than exciting image.
So there seems we have been looking at the new Toyota sportscar all wrong. We have just assumed it would be the MkV Supra and set our expectations accordingly. However in a recent interview with Motor1 UK President of Toyota's Gazoo Racing division, Shigeki Tomoyama, implied that the Supra might not wear Toyota badging, opting for Gazoo badging instead. Gazoo happens to be the new branding that Toyota is going to apply to its sportier, not boring cars. Think of it as Toyota's very own AMG or M Division. Problem being the name, Gazoo if you grew up in the late 80's early 90's as I did, this is the first thing that pops into your head when you hear the name Gazoo:
Cartoons aside Tomoyama did make some pretty big claims for the new sportscar. "The Supra will be a pure sports car," he told Motor1 UK. "The previous Supra had a straight six engine, twin turbochargers and rear-wheel drive. These were important elements." So he did technically call it a Supra which is good news. However, Toyota themselves have yet to attach the car's official name to it.
The car hasn't even made its public debut yet. We have seen spy shot after spy shot, laps of the Nurburgring but nothing that would give us a glimpse at the final product. We know it won't look like the gorgeous FT-1 concept and all renderings and guesses at the final look of the car have been underwhelming at best. That said we are still eagerly antcipating this car's public debut which could be as soon as this year's Tokyo Motor Show.
