Today the new Suzuki has announced details of its new Swift Sport, a car that I've really been looking forward to. I've driven the previous model and although it didn't have power on its side, it was still a riot to drive. But what exactly does the new one offer?
Genuine Hot Hatch
Not my words, but the words directly from the Japanese brand. Many - me included - would argue that the previous model was a warm hatch, but that is by no means a bad thing. Like a Mazda MX-5, the Swift Sport is more about the handling and the way it drives, rather than bar-knuckle speed. However, the new model is packing some more power than the one it replaces.
The naturally aspirated 1.6 litre engine is long gone and in its place is the 1.4 litre Boosterjet petrol engine that is used in the Vitara S. It pumps out 138bhp with 230Nm of torque - 70Nm than before. The power is fed through to front wheel via a 6-speed manual gearbox that has been refined to offer better changes. The car will sprint to 62mph in a respectable 6.2 seconds and the top speed is 127mph.
This in my eyes does not make it a hot hatch, but that doesn't matter, because if the last model proved anything, it's that you don't need lots of power to have fun. In the two times I drove the Mk2 model at no point did I want for more power. I'm not sure I could live with one long term without gaining an inch for more horses, but the car is a riot.
Not All About Power (Just As Well)
The handling was definitely one of the pervious model's strong points, but the new model has had changes made to the suspension, meaning it should corner even better. Changes have been made to the front to ensure that the - warning nerdy bit coming - camber rigidity has been increased by 15%. Good. I think.

The new car is also lighter on its feet, as it's been able to shed 80kg since the last model. It will still be safe though and in fact it will come with a full host of safety features included as standard. These include lane departure warning, high beam assist and radar brake support to name a few. The lack of weight will also make the car more fuel efficient, plus it will offer a more dynamic drive.
Great Looks
It may not be a true hot hatch, but it certainly looks the part. The standard Swift is lower and wider than than the previous model, so that makes it a great place to start for the Sport model. At the front you'll notice the swollen front bumper that really gives it that 'angry puppy' look. I think it looks fantastic personally. It sits on 17" alloys and at the back you have a double exhaust pipe, which is a must for any serious sports hatch.
What Do You Guys Think?
So then, what do you think of the new Swift Sport? I personally really like it, even though I don't consider it a proper hot hatch. the price is yet to be announced and it will go on sale next year. So, the new Swift Sport - it may not be full fat hot hatch, but I reckon it will still offer full fat fun!

6.2 seconds 0-60...is that right? because if it is that in my eyes makes it a hot hatch..lol...that doesnt seem right even though its light..i would expect around 7.9
That is the estimated 0-62, but yeah, that seems optimistic. I'd be surprised if it's below 7 seconds.
thats 0.2 secs faster than a golf gti..0.3 secs faster than a corsa vrx..0.5 secs faster than a fiesta st...those are some impressive stats from a swift...dont get me wrong im not saying it cant be true but just doesnt stack up to me..the other...
