The Nurburgring

in a Focus ST3

I did it! I conquered the Green Hell in my Focus ST3!

Well... Sort of.

I cheated.

A bit.

I bought Forza Motorsport 5 for the Xbox One and bought my real car - in game! After one sighting lap, I managed to put in a clean sub 10 minute lap in my Digital Focus ST3. I'll be honest, it wasn't quite as satisfying as doing a lap in the real car, however it was a lot safer and a lot less terrifying.

The Nordschlieffe is an unforgiving track. It's more or less Germany's Manx TT, except it's open all day, every day, except when it's booked for testing.

Could I clock under 10 minutes in my real car? I like to think so, but I really don't know. I think I'd have to do more laps to build up speed and I'd have to contend with other traffic. There are some corners with very little to no run off, which you can't really see around until you're committed.

Having a crash at 'the Ring' is bad. You don't just trash your car, you pay a huge recovery fee and have to pay for any barriers you've wrecked to be replaced. I'd like to do it. But I don't think I will. I'll have to consign myself to the comfort and safety of armchair racing, tearing around the many glorious racetracks of the world from the settee opposite my television, controller in hand.

I suppose, if, IF - I won one of those, 'do a film or article with one of the Grand Tour presenters' things, I'd consider doing a Nurburgring challenge video. I think, for the particular film - 'Around the Ring in Under 10 minutes in a Focus ST3', the best presenter to take would actually be Richard Hammond. Though, I'm not sure his wife and daughters would let him go given recent events and if he DID go, I really don't think I should let him have a go at driving!
