Anyone who has ever considered themselves a gearhead, petrolhead, or car guy ought to know about the SledgeHammer Corvette. Specifically developed and built as a record setting, high-speed machine, this C4 maxed out at a tick under 255mph on a 7.5 mile oval track back in 1988. It would be a couple decades before the Veyron and Hennessey Venom came around to crack that 250mph barrier once again.

The most striking feature of the SledgeHammer is the revised front facia, which would influence Callaway AeroBody kits for years that followed. The car's bodywork also featured an integrated rear spoiler and side vents behind both sets of Dymag wheels. Other than that, it looked like your regular old C4 Corvette.

Under the front clamshell though lurked a 5.7L Chevy V8 sporting two Turbonetics turbochargers. Callaway was able to get a remarkable 880 horsepower of out this thing, which was absolutely insane back in 1988. Inside, you'll find all the comforts and features you'd expect on similar C4 Vette's from this era. It has power leather seats, the iconic digital dashboard, a tape deck, and power windows and locks.

The SledgeHammer last came up for sale at Mecum's 2014 Kissimmee, Florida auction. It surprisingly did not sell despite a $600,000 bid. Bring a Trailer is now trying to auction this legend off, at the bid currently sits at just over $425k as I get ready to hit the "Publish" button on this Friday night. There are still nine days left in the auction; plenty of time for your AMC stocks to hit the moon so you can bid too.

  • I never liked the C4 but I’d pay a ton for this. It’s brilliant!

  • C4 the underestimated Corvette. C4 is far better than you think but it takes looking into it to understand the car. I have an 85 Z51 and love it. Easy to get HP out of, yes a bit stiff on the ride but flat cornering and the most comfortable seats I have ever sat in. Once you have one all the little nit picking complaints go away because it is a fun car to own. The C4 is the basis for all following models.

  • Oh wow, I remember the magazine articles about this from back then. I guess I didn't realize there was only one, I thought they built and sold them for a while. I don't know what it will sell for, but here's hoping the new owner is brave enough to try to recreate the original speed run... THAT would be something to see.
