The Polestar 1 is officially in pre-production

Set to go on sale next year, Polestar's 600bhp luxury hybrid grand tourer is now in the pre-production stage.

After initially debuting as a concept, it seems the Polestar 1 is well on its way to becoming a production car. For it has been announced that the luxury hybrid-coupe is now officially in pre-production.

The pre-production stage will see 34 prototype cars made - some of which will be for crash testing, some for weather testing, and some for other important tasks. The prototypes will also be used to try and iron out as many foibles as possible before Polestar release the car properly.

After the prototypes have fulfilled their duty, the Polestar 1 should eventually be rolling off the production line by the middle of 2019. Polestar themselves however won’t have dedicated showrooms for their range of one car. Instead, they’ll use the showrooms of their sister company Volvo, as well as their own independently run “Polestar spaces”, as they’re calling them.

While the prototypes are being built in Gothenburg, the production cars will be made in China. The construction methods used for the car’s carbon fibre body are entirely alien to the company, and require the development of specific tools to build and work on. The interior will mostly resemble the sort of thing you’d find in high-end Volvos, with a few special Polestar touches to set it apart.

Under the bonnet will sit a 2L compound-charged 4-cylinder engine, producing 335bhp. That will be augmented by a couple of electric motors, to make a grand total of 600bhp and 738lb-ft of torque, which will reach the road via all 4 wheels. The pure electric range of the Polestar is said to be 93 miles, which unlike many hybrids, actually gives it a fair amount of usability on electric power alone.

When it eventually arrives, the Polestar 1 will cost from £135,000 in the UK, which makes it rather expensive. Main rivals will include the BMW 8-series, Mercedes S-Class Coupe, and Aston Martin DB11 V8. If you ask me, it’ll be one hell of a comfy group test.

But now I want to ask you guys: are you excited for the Polestar 1? Are you glad it’s finally in pre-production, or do you think it’s overhyped? Let me know in the comments.

  • Actually the most attractive hybrid car of all time. But, and i can't believe i say this, i would love to have it four doors, and four proper seats, for it has the potential of becoming the best family holiday cruiser out there. Well... In my mind

  • I drive a 2004 C70, it was supposed to be the least Volvo Volvo. The thing is though, is that it's a Volvo at heart, in the greatest way. I love what they are doing, I just hope that it can still be a Volvo at heart, in a good way.

  • I take it back about the abuse I gave hybrids in the past. Its got to be better than driving around in a silent electric car.

P.S still hate the prius no one can forgive that car.
