The presentation of the Alfa Romeo Tonale is delayed by three months

The vehicle is not yet ready

The Alfa Romeo Tonale is one of the most eagerly awaited new cars of this year. The wait for what will be the little brother of the Stelvio seemed endless. The presentation of the compact SUV, scheduled for this autumn, has unfortunately been postponed for three months to further improve the vehicle before its launch.

Alfa Romeo CEO Jean Philippe Imparato has reportedly seen the SUV in its final form since early February. While the styling was decent, it was the technology that clearly did not convince the boss. In its plug-in hybrid version, the Tonale would offer insufficient performance.

The Tonale will use the platform of the Jeep Compass and will thus borrow the same electrified architecture as the American. It will therefore have a range of 30.4 mi (49 km) in electric mode. That's OK, but not much compared to the Peugeot 3008, which offers a range of almost 37.3 mi (60 km) without burning a drop of petrol.

Imparato is asking for more from Alfa Romeo in the most competitive segment in Europe. This is what it will take for the Italian brand to stand up against competitors like BMW, Mercedes and Audi.

  • i like the look of the front but it is still sad that alfa romeo makes more and more suv's and they are less focused on creating performance sedans like giulia. πŸ˜•

    • The problem is that average cars' buyers don't like sedans, but love SUVs.

And cars enthusiast now are a negligible % of the market...

Porsche, Lamborghini, lately Aston, all need to rely on SUVs for financial sustainability.

    • but i don't get why suvs are so popular: they consume more fuel, they are slow and too big for the city driving and they look uglier than most of the other type of cars. suvs are just a trend I guess πŸ™„

  • I hope the ALfa ROmeo TAnale is delayed for the rest of the year.

  • Imparato says the delay is for having better performances in the hybrid versions, but I am afraid that the real reason is to proceed with a cost-cutting razionalization of the project, that including to share underneath components with others assemblies of the now enlarged Stellantis family.

I am quite optimistic though: that would be a nice car overall, and most probably the best handling SUV of its category.

  • Sorry this is a shinning pile nothing more! They take a Jeep and keep the drivetrain to bring a small β€œAlfa” to market. If this doubles American sales it will hit 3500 units a month. Their dealer network is awful and so is their quality. If this was either a Chrysler or Dodge it would sell ten times the units.

    • "Their dealer network is awful" totally agree (if outside Italy)

" and so is their quality" not worse than average competitors, nowadays...

  • Those headlights remind me of the 159 and it looks menacing! If that gets the same QV engine like the Stelvio, it's gonna be a rocket! ❀️
