The Project Maybach is a mad, gold-painted concept designed by Virgil Abloh

It’s crazy, isn’t it?

I first learnt about the existence of Virgil Abloh because a friend showed me a picture of a pair of Off-White Converse sneakers – they were actually transparent – and I thought they were ultra-cool. I tried googling ‘Virgil Abloh Converse’ – silly me – I actually thought I could afford them. I couldn’t. And they were sold-out anyway.

Virgil Abloh, founder of Off-White and head of design at Louis Vuitton, died about a week ago, aged 41, due to a rare form of cancer. He invented a new, striking, bold design language, which he also used to design cars.

Back in 2020, Mercedes teamed up with Abloh for the Geländewagen project, which is the most Abloh thing that ever Ablohed. It’s unique. He also worked on something called the ‘Project Maybach’, and Mercedes-Maybach has recently released some pictures after receiving approval from Abloh’s family.

The Project Maybach is a 6-metre, 2-seater, electric off-roader/coupe with outrageous gold-tone exterior and 70s style seats and upholstery.

What do you think? I’m fairly confident most of you are going to like the interior but not the exterior, especially the front end. if that’s the case, then we’re on the same page. Let me know in the comments below.

  • It's overdesigned. Off-roaders are by definition utilitarian, and this one isn't. It's a statement piece rather than a car.
