Console generations are unlike cars. They take a lot longer to evolve. So a new set of consoles is big news, everywhere! The Xbox One and PS4 were revealed way back in 2013, when we had just had the London Olympics, the world was once again becoming stable after the crash, and frankly, we didn't have a global pandemic. Those were the days!

But the new generations of console are finally here, conveniently just in time for Christmas. And with the full picture, I can now tell you when and what you can buy!

PS5 looks futuristic, until the bending starts to mess with your eyes! Don't worry, its not broken! Its controller is miles better looking that the Xbox's but is it easier to use? We will have to find out...

Release Dates

The PS5 is on sale now! From giants such as Amazon, Walmart, John Lewis and Smyths Toys Superstore, you can get your hands on one if it's not out of allowed stock, (which many are). Just to be clear, these are preorders, secure an order now and you will get it at the start of November.

The Xbox Series consoles will be available to order on Tuesday 22nd September, from an almost identical selection of shops. Like the PS5, order now and you will get it in November, but Microsoft has specified it will arrive between the 10th and 30th of the month.

(Just a bit of speculation here, but Microsoft announced the release date a while ago, and there is a theory that Playstation rushed the release date so it could be before the Xbox and secure more orders. Unfortunately, the date wasn't well publicised so when it went on sale today there was a lot of confusion!)

Why is the top of my mini fridge curved in? Jokes aside, the Xbox Series X is much more functional, but less beautiful. The black makes it menacing, and the slight controller updates look better!

Range and Pricing

Xbox has a two tier structure:

Xbox Series S Console... £249 / $299

Xbox Series X Console... £449 / $499

Similarly, Sony offers two variations of the Playstation 5, with a disk-less variant (like the Series S) at a cheaper price, while the adaptable disk version costs more...

PS5 Digital... £349 / $399

PS5 Console... £449 / $499

The prices are fairly level then. Time for the specs.

The XBOX Series S. The most expensive way to say 'I wanted a new console but didn't have the extra to buy a proper one.'

Specs

I am a Playstation and Xbox user, so I am not going to sugarcoat this either way.

The Playstation 5 blows the Series S out of the water in terms of specs, but.... the Series X dominates the PS5. There is not a single spec of the PS5 that is better than the top level Xbox, and so while it looks better, it doesn't quite perform as well. However, and this is a big however, when developing a cross platform game, creators often have to level out the consoles so that waiting times and loading times are the same.

So while the Xbox has the potential to be superior, we shall have to see if the devs take full advantage!

  • And before anyone comments 'its a car page', yes, but we are encouraged to diversify and occasionally I wander off topic!

  • The PS5 Digital Edition is a big trap. You can't buy games on Amazon anymore. No used games either. The standard PS5 is definitely the best buy.

    • Absolutely! Are you angling for either of these?

    • I pre ordered the PS5 today but wouldn’t say I prefer one over the other. I was hoping we’d heard more about GT7 yesterday
