The Volkswagen R14 is a 947kg Porsche tuned, rear wheel drive, 1.4 turbo charged 3 cylinder engine with 198 HP Pocket Rocket
A few years back Volkswagen released the UP! GTi with 113hp being in the spirit of the original Golf GTi. Simple, small , agile and a go-kart like driving experience.
While a 0 to 60 in 8.8 second would be a good time back in the 70's the era of the original GTi, it is not really impressive in our time. And while the UP! GTi is Definitely so much fun it could be faster.
Here is where the Volkswagen R14 comes in, the name is derived from the 1.4L engine, just like the other R predecessors, the Golf R32 and the Passat R36.
This is however a bit different, in the past Porsche has taken over performance projects from other companies such as Mercedes and Audi, this time is a joint project between Volkswagen, their high performance R division and Porsche.
Only available as a 3 door the R14 gets rid of the rear seats and the free space is replaced with an optional roll cage. The Porsche tuned turbocharged 1.4L delivers the power through a manual 6 speed gearbox and transfers the power to the rear wheels.
Other than the engine Porsche tweaked the suspension and the tiny UP! borrows a few parts, such as the side mirrors, seats, steering wheel, brakes and front lights.
The already light UP! gets even lighter replacing the roof and the hatch back with carbon fiber parts:
A new front and rear bumper, completely new LED running lights, Special 17" rims and a matte finish gives the car an aggressive and playful look.
This 950Kg delivers 198 HP that goes from 0 to 60 in 5.1 seconds., this certainly is not the fastest car but most likely the most fun to drive.
Would a starting price of 28,000€ be to much?
Well... its always good to dream of little fun cars like this!
