Whatever happened to Senna's Sonic trophy? We asked - and McLaren responded

First viewing of iconic Donington '93 trophy in 25 years

2y ago

On the 11th of April, 25 years to the day since Ayrton Senna took that now legendary win in the wet at Donington, we asked, where had the Sonic the Hedgehog trophy gone?

In a clever PR stunt by race sponsor SEGA, Sonic was presented to Senna on the podium, ahead of him getting the proper trophy.

Clearly, Ron Dennis would not want something so brash on display with all the other trophies in the McLaren reception, so after the race it was put away, never to be seen again.

Until now.

We think this piece of F1 history needs to be on display, not stuck in a cupboard.

Come on McLaren, get the hedgehog out front where he belongs!

  • Amazing! Was that the same year the Williams had the little Senna legs down the side of the car?

  • These are two different trophies, the colour is different, and Sonic's hand is in a different position.
