The seven year 7 minute threesome

Let's evolve the Drivetribe life with the first article in the SPEEDBOMBS tribe. As we are talking about our beloved muscle cars going around corners I thought what could describe this passion better than a lovely threesome that lasts less than 8 minutes...

Here we are with three Camaros from 2012 to 2017. We have seen the 5th gen getting supercharged, N/A-ed and supercharged again in its 6th gen form. Every time the clock stopped earlier when the test drivers were visiting the Nürburgring.

Let the happy threesome start with the good 'ol 2012 Camaro ZL1. It did the lap in 7:41min what was, 4 years ago, a big hickup for all the supercar manufacturers. A car that is close to 1900kg, with a pushrod V8, from the United States and even not named Corvette (we will have a look at these beauties another day) is doing a sub-8 lap...not to mention the price tag (base price about $57.000).

What we are here for is THE lap...buckle up and enjoy:

2014, one year after the first facelift for the 5th gen, GM decided to go all out on the track (first appetizer was the 1LE which was a track optimized SS). But the allmighty Z28 was on another level (unfortunately also with the price...$75k was on the sticker).

More than 100kg lighter (about 1750kg), equipped with the 7.0l LS7 engine out of the Corvette Z06, ceramic brakes, track tires from Pirelli, functional aerodynamics, new diff and an over the top damper setup. That all summed up to a lap time of 7:37min...woah (and if I remember right, there were some wet spots left on the track...):

Here you will find the test from Car & Driver, worth a read: www.caranddriver.com/chevrolet/camaro-z-28

With the 6th gen, GM switched from the Zeta (like a Holden Monaro) to the Alpha (Cadillac ATS) platform which makes the base SS and therefore also the ZL1 about 100kg lighter..but this time with a whopping 640HP and more torque you'll ever need!

Coupled to the well known 6-speed manual or the brand new 10(!)-speed automatic transmission the 2017 ZL1 ripped of the Ring in 7:29min..so we are closer to the 7 than to the 8 now...who would have thought about that 7 years ago when the 5th gen restarted the Camaro history?

No official times, but I think it must have been around 8:20min for the base V8 model...so we are close to a 1 minute improvement which is a universe in terms of a lap time. So enjoy the 2017 ZL1 lap and let's get excited about what maybe a new Z28 could do:
