The six-year old BMW i8 finally retires and what a tribute it has been given
To celebrate BMW's maiden electric sports coupe's success and retirement, 18 examples in quirky colours have been delivered to their owners.
BMW set the stage on fire when it unwrapped its first-ever one of its kind electric sports car, the i8 in 2014. It apparently came from the future and bore such individuality in its styling that car fanatics and celebrities alike, became huge fans of it.

However, things weren't as blinging as they were at the time of its launch. The lack of adequate infrastructure then to support such a high-tech electric vehicle and the tough transition from the deafeningly vocal gasoline-powered machines to something hushed and extremely silent were the prime reasons for its tepid success.
However, the car marked a solid breakthrough for BMW's future of electric mobility and happened to be the trailblazer for other manufacturers as well. No wonder BMW was proud for the giant leap that they had made. Hence, a remarkable tribute to such an icon was imminent.

In a move to do just that, BMW has custom-made the last 18 examples of the i8 for its owners and have parked all of them side by side for a perfect picturesque. Some of the new owners were present at the time of the ceremony too. The bespoke colour trims make the i8 look apart from the other 20,500 units that have been delivered in these brief six years.
Green with envy- the i8.
BMW says that building these 18 samples as a one-off was an arduous task for the technicians who eventually had to paint them by hand. The company also had to bring its suppliers in agreement to provide the vivid components for each shade.
What's worth highlighting is that some of the owners belong to the BMW i8 Club International. This means that the fandom of the i8 knows no bounds and I am sure the sports car would be holding a special place in their hearts.
The last example of the i8 was finished in the colour Portimao Blue, that works brilliantly in line with the several blue accents all over the exterior of the car telltaling it to be an electric coupe.
There are several cars that have gained more popularity posthumously than while they were in production. The i8 is somewhat, a nod to this. Though it didn't find as many takers as BMW wished it would, considering that it was one of the first opulent electric supercars and that the world is driving towards large-scale electrification, the i8 is likely to be a highly sought-after product in the used car market. In the years to come, the infrastrucuture is likely to improve and that only means the i8 would be a viable companion for everybody.
