The Skoda Kodiaq vRS is the fastest ever seven-seat SUV to lap the Nurburgring
If you thought there were no more records to break at the Green Hell, you were wrong...
Skoda has set a Nurburgring lap record that we didn’t even know existed. The Czech carmaker's upcoming Kodiaq vRS is officially the quickest seven-seat SUV to ever lap the famous old track, clocking in with a time of just 9:28.84.
To break records, you need a hell of a driver
To set a lap record at the Green Hell, you need a pretty special driver. For this task, Skoda drafted in the Queen of the Ring herself, Sabine Schmitz - who has famously driven in both VLN 24hr racing as well as completing several thousand ‘Ring-Taxi’ laps at the legendary 12.94-mile long circuit.
How did they set a lap record in a Skoda?
To get their new car round the track in record time, Skoda has given the Kodiaq vRS a 2.0-litre biturbo diesel engine pushing out 237bhp and 368lb-ft of torque – making it the second hot vRS model to come to the UK.
If you think that this time is a bit on the slow side, you should remember that it was set using a massive seven-seat SUV that gets to 62mph in around 7-ish seconds before hitting 140mph at the top end – making this lap time something of an achievement in a car that’s relatively ordinary, performance wise.
How does it compare to other Nurburgring records?
Well, the Italians can sleep comfortably at night knowing that the current SUV lap record holder, the Alfa Romeo Stevio Quadrifolglio remains light years ahead with its lap time of 7:51.7, making the Skoda some 1:38.14 slower by comparison.
But both of these SUV records fall to the wayside when you get to the overall record holder for the track, the Nio EP9, which blitzed the distance in just 6:45.90.
A Green Hell record car – that will do the school run
The Skoda Kodiaq vRS is expected to break cover officially towards the end of this year and will boast a seven-seat layout and a cavernous interior that most will use to haul children around. But it does men that owners will be able to brag about their car’s Nurburgring record-setting prowess while doing the morning school run.

Says more about the incredible driving skills of Sabine than the Skoda's performance.
