MAHARAJA JAI SINGH PRABHAKAR

The Maharaja of Alwar, whose name was Jai Singh Prabhakar, was a very wealthy ruler and was the ruler of Alwar from 1892 to 1937. Jai Singh initially was noted as brilliant, erudite and charming.

HE WAS JUST TAKING A CASUAL WALK WHEN...

When he was on his visit to London, he decided to take a walk around the city wearing ordinary English clothes. While walking, he came across a Rolls Royce showroom. He decided to go inside and ask the staff about the specifications of their cars. But the salesmen just saw him as a poor Indian. They ignored his requests for a Test-Drive and mocked him and then showed him the way out.

The Maharaja was insulted, he was furious. He just got back to his hotel room and asked his staff for a visit from the Maharaja to the Rolls Royce showroom to be arranged. He later came to the showroom, dressed in sparkling clothes and was adorned with jewelries. They welcomed him with a Red Carpet and the salesmen were standing bowing to the king.

He entered the showroom and spent quite a long time studying their cars on display, and later bought all 6 of the cars on display. He even paid for them all right away, including the cash for the costs of delivery.

The salesmen were very happy and said that they will be delivered to him back in India very soon. So once the Maharaja got all 6 cars, he gave them to the municipality of New Delhi and ordered them to use those cars for collecting the waste. The most respected car brands of that time was being used to collect garbage! The news spread like wildfire and the reputation of Rolls Royce Company became a laughing stock. Later on, The Rolls Royce company owners sent a telegram to the Maharaja in India offering apologies and requested him to stop transportation of waste in Rolls Royce cars. Not only that, but they also offered six new cars to the Maharaja free of cost! the reputation of the company suffered because of this event. Whenever someone used to boast that he/she owned a Rolls Royce, people laughed at him/her saying, “which one? The same that is used in India for carrying the waste of the city?” So he accepted the apologies and stopped using the cars for collecting waste. But, after that incident, he never bought a Rolls Royce.

  • You know, there's a lot of salesmen/women who treat their customers wrong. Happens every day, everywhere. Happened to Oprah Winfrey, happened to my Gran. I do hope that every littleminded salesman/woman does get told one day. In the least expected moment. By the least expected person.

Thumbs up to His Highness the Maharaja, he did well.
