The Story of How This Car Had Gotten Me Into A Really Awkward School Situation

In short, a LOT of misunderstandings.

So I have this one friend in class who shares the same name with a car that I like, the Lotus Elise. She moved into the country not too long ago, around two and a half years ago to be exact. At first, we're pretty close only because we had mutual friends, but as time went on we bonded even more. Now, she's one of my closest friends in my class. We would go out with our friends together and go somewhere once in a while, play football together, or chat about my really stupid love life which is apparently a funny but interesting conversation topic between the two of us. She gave me her permission to post this by the way

However, this happened before I was close with her. Well, I was just getting to know her after minding my own business for about a year. I have a soft spot for Lotuses, as they give you supercar looks, handling and a really great and well-balanced driving experience for a lower price. Unfortunately, only a few people in where I live bought a Lotus, so seeing one on the road is basically a really rare experience.

I remembered when I was having a chat with a few friends, with her sitting right across me. At that time, she was only in my class for around a year. One of her first friends asked me what my favorite car was somewhere during the conversation. Of course, I mentioned a few cars that were on top of my list, such as the Honda NSX, McLaren F1, Porsche 918 and the Lotus Elise (Hey the Venom GT was based on that). Apparently, the only words that she picked up were "Favorite" and "Elise" because God knows where her mind was during the entire conversation.

After I got home, I saw that the Lotus Elise 260 Cup had recently been unveiled. I saw the official images that were posted in the Lotus newsletter and thought "Hey this would make a good profile and cover picture". So I saved two of the images from their official website and set them for my profile and cover picture on the chatting app my class used at the time. Usually, I would just put the name of the car as my profile status so it would go along with the pictures. So of course, I had set my profile status to "Lotus Elise 260 Cup"

A few days later, summer holidays came. After getting back from a Cross-European trip, I met up with one of my close friends. He showed me a chat between him and Elise. In a nutshell, its basically the both of them talking about how creepy I was for "liking her" when in reality I liked the car that had the same name as she does. He tried to settle things straight by saying that it was a car that I liked, before doing a complete 180-degree-turn and had started to give her wrong ideas about me.

I was fuming but at the same time very embarrassed. I already had very awkward experiences with her before that and you're just going to make the situation between me and her even worse. Come on.

After we came back to school, of course, I had to explain it all to her, awkwardly.

Now that I know her better, she's one of my closest friends in class and is probably one of the nicest people I've met so far in my life. But she still vividly remembers this story and brings it up once in a while just to make me cringe.

  • Bwahaha.

It shows it is better to raise any perceived issues straight with the person.

  • At least she's real. The only Lotus Elise I know is a character I made up for my written work. But she's pretty cool too though, she's even English herself.
