The Subaru Matsuri

2y ago

I happen to live in the home-town of Subaru; Ota-City, which is situated in Gunma-Prefecture. Several times a year a festival is held at one of the three main Subaru factories in the city. Back in May I went to the Oizumi Spring Matsuri.

When you hear the term ‘Subaru Matsuri’, you might picture some kind of late night ‘Subie’ meet with street racing, neon lights and lots and lots of ‘stance’. This event couldn’t be further from that. It’s a family event with food stands, kids entertainment and tours of the factories and is a time for the locals to learn about the company that brings so much industry to their small city.

Among food stands selling shaved ice, yaki-soba and takoyaki were small merchandise stands selling caps, shirts, stickers, stationery, mini-cars and pretty much anything a Subaru lover could ever wish for.

Riding the Subaru bus to the main engine factory

I took a tour of the main engine factory where engines are assembled for Legacys, Imprezas and BRZs all over the world, but unfortunately I wasn’t allowed to take photos in there. I was also taken for a drive around the factory grounds in a new Impreza WRX STI and got to take a close look at Subaru’s Works Super GT BRZ race car (More photos of that coming soon).
