The third generation of the Porsche 911 was known internally as the 964 and combined the original silhouette with state-of-the-art technology. It was also a bet on the future Porsche, which was experiencing economic challenges when the car launched in 1988.
An all-wheel drive system that had originally been designed for the high-performance 959 was introduced to the 911 series for the first time on board the Carrera 4. With electronically controlled and hydraulically regulated power distribution, it was well ahead of its time. The anti-lock braking system (ABS) – just like power steering – came as standard and the 911 Carrera 2 with rear-wheel drive followed in 1989, featuring an adaptive Tiptronic gearbox.
